The third question from Fatwa No. ( 5432 ):

Q3:
Do not curse Time, for it is Allah Who is Timeلا تسبوا الدهر فأنا الدهر أقلب
Sahih Muslim 2246e
... etc. Is this a hadith? And if so, is it authentic — meaning: is its wording authentic — and what is its meaning?

A3: Al-Bukhari and Muslim narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, said: The son of Adam displeases Me by abusing Dahr (time), whereas I am Dahr--I alternate the night and the day.قال الله تعالى: يؤذيني ابن آدم يسب الدهر وأنا الدهر أقلب الليل والنهار
Sahih Muslim 2246b
, and in another narration:
Do not curse Time, for it is Allah Who is Time.لا تسبوا الدهر فإن الله هو الدهر
Sahih Muslim 2246e
. Al-Baghawi (may Allah have mercy on him) said in explaining its meaning: “The Arabs used to blame and curse time (al-dahr) when calamities struck; because they attributed to it the misfortunes and hardships that befall them, saying: ‘The blows of time have struck them’ or ‘Time has destroyed them.’ When they attributed to time the hardships that befall them, they cursed its doer, and the curse of time thus returned to Allah (Mighty and Majestic), for He is the true doer of the matters they describe. So they were forbidden from cursing time.” This ends with a summary. And success is from Allah. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
