The questioner : He says: We are a group of teachers, and the school is more than one hundred and fifty kilometers from the town where we live. We commute to the school daily. We have disagreed on the ruling regarding shortening and combining the prayers of Dhuhr and Asr. Do we have the right to shorten and combine at this distance while commuting to the school daily, or not?

The Shaykh : The precaution is that they should not shorten or combine, because such a trip is not considered travel by people, even if it is considered travel by some scholars. So what I see for them is: that they should not combine or shorten. Yes, if it were assumed that when they arrive at their homes they are tired and fear that if they sleep they will not wake up until sunset, or they fear that if they wait until the call to Asr prayer, they will pray Asr while in a state of heavy drowsiness. In that case, we say: combine, because combining is more lenient than shortening. There is no harm in combining. And if they arrive at their town, they sleep until sunset. As for shortening, I see that the precaution is that they should not shorten, because this is not called travel in the custom of people now. Yes.
