Seeking assistance from the graves of the awliya (close friends of Allah), or making vows to them, or taking them as intermediaries with Allah

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The first question of Fatwa number ( 5000 ):
Q1: Whatis the ruling on seeking help from the graves of the awliya (close friends of Allah), circumambulating them, seeking blessing from their stones, making vows to them, sheltering under their graves, and taking them as a means to Allah? ؟
A1: Seeking assistance from the graves of the awliya (close friends of Allah), or making vows to them, or taking them as intermediaries with Allah by asking them for such things is major shirk (associating partners with Allah) that expels one from the Islamic religion and necessitates eternal abode in the Fire for one who dies upon it. As for circumambulating graves and shading them, it is a bid'ah (religious innovation) whose performance is forbidden, and it is a great means to the worship of their people other than Allah. It may become shirk (associating partners with Allah) if one intends that the deceased thereby brings him benefit or averts harm from him, or if one intends by the circumambulation to draw near to the deceased. And success is from Allah. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
