What is recommended to do when placing the deceased in the grave
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q3: Here with us, when a Muslim dies, they make du'a' for him on that day and for the next seven days, and they make du'a' for him on the fortieth day three times. And some of the scholars here with us said: When a Muslim dies and we place him in his grave, we say: prayers upon the noble Prophet, and we return to the house, and we do not do any du'a' at all. They do not make du'a' at the time of the prayer. Therefore, we want to know: when a Muslim dies, what are the Sunnahs of making du'a' for him?
Vol. 3: First: Designating the first day, the seven days, or the fortieth day for making du'a' for the deceased, we know no basis for this in the Book or the Sunnah, nor in the practice of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them), nor in that of any other of the Salaf of the Ummah. Rather, it is one of the newly invented religious innovations. It is established from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:Sahih Muslim 1718b , and in another narration: Sahih Muslim 1718a . Second : When he is placed in his grave, what is narrated by Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) is said: Mishkat al-Masabih 1707 , and it is narrated Sunan Abi Dawud 3213Sahih (Al-Albani) that he said: al-Tirmidhi said: This is a good, anomalous hadith.
Third : It is recommended (mustahabb) that those who follow the deceased stand at his grave after the burial and make du'a' for him for forgiveness and steadfastness; because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded that. As for sending prayers upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when the deceased is placed in the grave, we do not know any basis for it. And success is from Allah. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
