He says in his letter: Among us, when a person dies and his grave is dug and he is placed in the side niche, a person calls the adhan in the grave. Is it permissible to call the adhan in front of the deceased, and what is the ruling on that?

The questioner : Welcome, His Eminence Shaykh Muhammad.

The Shaykh : Welcome to you.

The questioner : Shaykh Muhammad, this is a letter we received from Dammam from Muhsin or Muhsin ibn Muhsin Ahmad. He says in his letter: Among us, when a person dies and his grave is dug and he is placed in the side niche, a person calls the adhan in the grave. Is it permissible to call the adhan in front of the deceased, and what is the ruling on that? Please inform us. May Allah reward you with the best reward.

The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions. There is no basis for calling the adhan when the deceased is placed in his grave. Rather, the deceased is placed in his grave and laid on his right side facing the qiblah, and then the side niche is filled in. When the earth is leveled over him and the burial is finished, one stands over him and asks for steadfastness for him and seeks forgiveness for him, as came from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that when he finished burying the deceased, he would stand over him and say
Seek forgiveness for your brother, and beg steadfastness for him, for he will be questioned now. استغفروا لأخيكم واسألوا له التثبيت فإنه الأن يُسأل
Sunan Abi Dawud 3221Sahih (Al-Albani)
