Fatwa No. ( 4755 ):
Q: I seek your legal ruling regarding the practice of a group of Muslims who recite and venerate, on the 12th of Rabi' al-Awwal of every year and on the occasions of weddings, in the place where the newborn is named, a book called: [The Prophet's Birth] authored by the shaykh Muhammad Uthman al-Mirghani . The subject of the book is the biography of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), and its author claims: that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is present during the recitation of this book. It contains two chapters: one is recited by their leader while standing, and the second implies seeking nearness to Allah through unknown persons. It begins like this: "O Lord, through them and their families, hasten the victory and the relief." We did not know the reference for these pronouns; because it is the first verse in that same chapter. Therefore, I hope you will rule for me: is it valid for a person to pray behind these people? I have told them: it is not valid to estimate this book at this level, and there is no harm in its recitation by anyone who wants the biography, individually, without the form that we see and hear. I hope you will broadcast the answer for several days so that we can hear it, and may you remain a treasure for the service of Islam and Muslims?
A: Celebrating the birth of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in Rabi' al-Awwal or otherwise is a forbidden religious innovation, and reciting what was authored about his birth in Rabi' al-Awwal, on the occasion of a wedding, or on the birth of children, or in the week when they are named and the 'aqiqah is slaughtered for them, or similar occasions, is not established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him),
nor from any of his Companions, nor from those after them among the leaders of guidance in the three blessed centuries (may Allah be pleased with them all). It is therefore an invented religious innovation. It is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:Sahih Muslim 1718a . And success is from Allah. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
