The fourth question of Fatwa No. ( 2252 ):
Q4: If some of the brothers go on a journey or for 'Umrah or the like, they order one of them or some of them to recite the morning and evening adhkar reported from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) every morning and evening, and the rest of the group listens to him. What is the ruling on that?
A4: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had adhkar and supplications with which he would remember Allah and call upon Him in the morning and evening, privately. His Companions heard them from him and learned them, and they would remember Allah and call upon Him with them in the morning and evening, each one of them individually, following the example of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). It is not reported from him (peace and blessings be upon him) or from his Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) — as far as we know — that they used to say those adhkar and supplications together, either reciting them all together or some reciting while the others listened. A Muslim should follow the guidance of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) in their remembrance and supplication and the manner of doing so, and in all else that he prescribed (peace and blessings be upon him).
For all good is in following him, and all evil is in opposing him. Gathering for this and adopting it as a method and custom is an innovation (bid'ah) that has been introduced. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
'A'isha reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: He who innovates things in our affairs for which there is no valid (reason) (commits sin) and these are to be rejected.
من أحدث في أمرنا هذا ما ليس منه فهو ردAvoid novelties, for every novelty is an innovation, and every innovation is an error.
إياكم ومحدثات الأمور، فإن كل محدثة بدعة، وكل بدعة ضلالةThe Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) never failed to say these words in the morning and the evening: “O Allah! I ask you for pardon and well-being in my religious and worldly affairs, and my family and my wealth. O Allah! Cover my weaknesses and set at ease my dismay. O Allah! Preserve me from the front and from behind and on my right and on my left and from above, and I seek refuge with you lest I be swallowed up by the earth.”
Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) would say in the morning, “O Allah! By Your leave we have reached the morning and by your leave we have reached the evening. By Your leave we live and die. Unto you is our resurrection.” In the evening, he would say the same except the last phrase: “and to you do we return.”
It was narrated by Abu Dawud, al-Nasa'i, al-Tirmidhi, and Ibn Majah. And success is from Allah. May Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
