The sixth question of Fatwa No. ( 9580 ):
Q6: I want a comprehensive explanation of this hadith so that we understand it correctly:Musnad Ahmad 205[lts isnad is qawi] (Darussalam) ?
A6: The hadith is from 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who said:Musnad Ahmad 205[lts isnad is qawi] (Darussalam) It was narrated by the Imam Ahmad and al-Tirmidhi and al-Nasa'i and Ibn Majah and Ibn Hibban and al-Hakim, and al-Tirmidhi said: It is hasan sahih.
The reality of tawakkul (reliance upon Allah) is the sincere dependence of the heart on Allah (Mighty and Majestic) in seeking benefits and repelling harms in the matters of this world and the Hereafter. The meaning of the hadith is that if people were to realize tawakkul in their hearts and depend on Him entirely in bringing about what benefits them and repelling what harms them, and if they took hold of the beneficial means, He would provide them with their sustenance with the slightest effort, just as He provides sustenance to birds merely by their going out in the morning and returning in the evening. This is a type of seeking, but it is a light effort. Realizing tawakkul does not conflict with striving in the means by which Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) has decreed things and by which His laws have run in His creation. For Allah the Exalted commanded the adoption of means along with His command to place trust in Him. Thus, striving in the means with the limbs is obedience, and placing trust in Him with the heart is faith in Him. Allah the Exalted said:[Al-Ma'idah 5:11] So He made tawakkul accompany taqwa (mindfulness of Allah), which is the performance of the commanded means. And tawakkul without performing the commanded means is pure weakness, even if it is mixed with a type of tawakkul. Therefore, the servant should not make his tawakkul weakness, nor his weakness tawakkul, but rather he should make his tawakkul part of the means without which the intended goal is not achieved. And success is from Allah. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
Q6: I want a comprehensive explanation of this hadith so that we understand it correctly:
If you were to put your trust in Allah as you should, you would be given provision like the birds: they go out hungry in the morning and come back with full bellies in the evening.

and fear Allah. And upon Allah let the believers rely.
