Fatwa No. ( 598 ):
Q: A group of students of knowledge came across a hadith in their reading:, but some people said that this hadith is not established. I hope for your guidance: is it authentic or not?
A: Al-Tirmidhi narrated in his Sunan from the route of Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), who said:. Then Al-Tirmidhi mentioned from Yahya ibn Sa'id al-Qattan that he said: This is, in my view, a denounced narration. Then Al-Tirmidhi said: This is a strange narration from the hadith of Anas; we do not know it except from this route. Al-Tirmidhi said: It has also been narrated from Amr ibn Umayyah al-Damri from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to the effect of this. The Hafiz al-Haythami mentioned in his book [Majma' al-Zawa'id wa Manba' al-Fawa'id], in its tenth volume, under the title: The Chapter on Tying It and Relying on Allah, the hadith to which Al-Tirmidhi referred, saying: From Amr ibn Umayyah that he said: It was narrated by Al-Tabarani with two chains, one of which includes: Amr ibn Abdullah ibn
Umayyah al-Damri , and I did not know him, and the rest of its narrators are trustworthy. He also mentioned in the tenth volume, under the heading: The Chapter on Relying on Allah and Tying It and Relying, the following: From Amr ibn Umayyah al-Damri that he said: It was narrated by Al-Tabarani from various routes, and the narrators of one of them are the narrators of the authentic collections, except for Ya'qub ibn Abdullah ibn Amr ibn Umayyah, who is trustworthy. Al-Suyuti mentioned in the letter al-Ha' of his book [al-Jami' al-Saghir] that the hadith was narrated by Al-Tirmidhi, and he marked it with a symbol of weakness. In summary: There is discussion regarding the hadith, but its meaning is correct; because the exhortation to take the means while relying on Allah is established in the Book and the authentic Sunnah. So, whoever takes the means and relies on them alone, negating reliance on Allah, is one who associates partners with Allah. And whoever relies on Allah and negates the means is an ignorant, extreme, and mistaken person. What is required by the Shari'ah is to combine both. And success is from Allah. May Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
