The Reality of Reliance upon Allah
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 2798 ):
Q: It is not reliance upon Allah to throw yourself into a swimming pool when you do not know how to swim, or to risk your life in a sporting activity for which you have not trained, or to leave your bed in the season of mosquitoes and sleep outside the room, or to stop using insecticide while you are inside the room and expose yourself to fever, or to leave your drawer (your desk) open without closing it so that its contents are lost. What is the reality of reliance upon Allah? We ask for your guidance, with much thanks.
A: Reliance upon Allah is entrusting the matter to Him, the Exalted, alone, and it is obligatory; indeed, it is a fundamental principle of faith. This is based on His saying, the Exalted:[Al-Ma'idah 5:23] It is one of the strong spiritual means for achieving what is desired and fulfilling interests. However, the believer must combine it with whatever other means are available to him, whether they are acts of worship, such as supplication, prayer, charity, and maintaining family ties, or material means to which Allah’s Sunnah has attached their causes, such as the examples the questioner mentioned in his inquiry and similar ones. This is in emulation of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), who was the best of those who rely on Allah. He would take the appropriate other means while his reliance on Allah, the Exalted, was perfect. So, whoever abandons the other means when they are available and is content
with reliance alone, he contradicts the guidance of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and his reliance is called weakness, not lawful reliance. And success is from Allah. May Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
