Reciting over Zamzam water and giving it to another to achieve a purpose

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q2: What is the ruling on reciting over Zamzam water by specific individuals to give it to a person to achieve any purpose or for his healing?
A2: It is narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he drank from the water of Zamzam, that he used to carry it, and that he encouraged drinking from it and said:
The water of Zamzam is for whatever it is drunk for.ماء زمزم لما شرب له
Sunan Ibn Majah 3062Hasan (Darussalam)
, so from Ibn Abbas
Ibn ‘Abbas said that when God’s messenger came to the place for supplying water and asked for some, al-‘Abbas said, “Goto your mother, Fadl, and bring God’s messenger something to drink from her.” He asked again for water, and he said, “Messenger of God, they are putting their hands in it.” He asked once more and drank some of it. He then went to Zamzam where they were exerting themselves in supplying water and said, “Go ahead, for you are engaged in a good work.” Then pointing to his shoulder he said, “Were it not that you would be overpowered, I would go down and put the rope on this.” (This means that if the Prophet were seen drawing water from Zamzam himself others would think they had the right to do the same, and chose who had the office of drawing water would lose their privilege) Bukhari transmitted it.
Mishkat al-Masabih 2663
. It was narrated by al-Bukhari , and from Ibn Abbas he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The water of Zamzam is for what it is drunk for. If you drink it seeking healing, Allah will heal you. If you drink it to be satiated, Allah will satiate you with it. If you drink it to quench your thirst, Allah will quench it. It is the provision of Jibril and the drink of Isma'ilماء زمزم لما شرب له، إن شربته تستشفي به شفاك الله، وإن شربته يشبعك أشبعك الله به، وإن شربته لقطع ظمئك قطعه الله وهي هزمة جبريل وسقيا إسماعيل
It was narrated by al-Daraqutni and it was reported by al-Hakim , and from Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her)
that she would carry some Zamzam water, and she would say: "Indeed the Messenger of Allah would carry it."أنها كانت تحمل من ماء زمزم وتخبر أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يحمله
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 963Sahih (Darussalam)
, it was narrated by al-Tirmidhi ... and so on
of the hadiths that came regarding the virtue of the water of Zamzam and its properties. And although there is discussion regarding some of these hadiths, some scholars authenticated them, and the Companions acted upon them, and the practice in accordance with their implications has continued to our day. This is supported by what Muslim narrated in his Sahih from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) who said about Zamzam:
It is blessed, and it is food that nourishesإنها مباركة، وإنها طعام طعم
, and Abu Dawud added with a sound chain:
and a cure for sicknessوشفاء سقم
, and it is not established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he used to recite over the water of Zamzam for any of his Companions for them to drink or to rub themselves with it, in order to achieve a purpose or hope for healing from an illness, despite its great blessing, high rank, and widespread benefit, and his eagerness for the good of his Ummah, and despite his frequent visits to Zamzam before the Hijrah, and his multiple Umrahs and his Hajj to the Sacred House after the Hijrah. It is also not established that he directed his Companions to recite over it, despite the obligation upon him to convey the message and explain things to the Ummah. If it had been prescribed, he would have done it and explained it to his Ummah, for there is no good except that he guided them to it, and no evil except that he warned them against it. However, there is no harm in reciting over it for the purpose of seeking healing, just like other waters, rather it is even more so, because of the blessing and healing contained in it, due to the aforementioned hadiths. And success is from Allah. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
