Fatwa No. ( 4715 ):
Q: What is the meaning of the phrase in the Qudsi hadith:
so I become his sense of hearing with which he hears, and his sense of sight with which he sees, and his hand with which he grips, and his leg with which he walksفإذا أحببته كنت سمعه الذي يسمع به وبصره الذي يبصر به ويده التي يبطش بها ورجله التي يمشي بها
Sahih al-Bukhari 6502

A: When a Muslim fulfills what is obligatory upon him, then strives to draw near to Allah the Exalted through voluntary acts of obedience and persists in that, Allah the Exalted makes it easy for him and loves him, and he becomes a helper for him in everything he does and leaves. So when he hears, he is guided by Allah in his hearing, and he does not listen to anything but good. He does not accept anything but the truth, and falsehood is removed from him. And when he sees with his eye or his heart, he sees by the light of Allah, so in that he is on the guidance of Allah and has penetrating insight by the support and success of Allah. He sees the truth as truth and falsehood as falsehood. And when he strikes with something, he strikes with the strength of Allah, so his striking is from
the striking of Allah in support of the truth. And when he walks, his walking is in obedience to Allah, seeking knowledge and striving in the path of Allah. In summary, his work with his apparent and hidden limbs is by the guidance of Allah and strength from Him, the Exalted. And by this it becomes clear that there is no evidence in the hadith that Allah descends into His creation or unites with any of them. And what points to this is what came at the end of the hadith in the saying of Allah the Exalted:
And if He asks Me, I will give to him, and if he seeks refuge in Me, I will grant him refugeولئن سألني لأعطينه، ولئن استعاذ بي لأعيذنه
and what came in some narrations in His saying:
By Me he hears and by Me he sees...فبي يسمع وبي يبصر...
etc.; for that is a guidance to the intended meaning in the beginning of the hadith, and an explicit statement of the questioner, the one asked, the one seeking refuge, the one granting refuge, the one seeking help, and the one helping. And this hadith is similar to the other Qudsi hadith in which Allah the Exalted says:
My servant fell ill and you did not visit him...عبدي مرضت فلم تعدني...
etc., so each of them explains its beginning with its end. But the people of desires follow what is ambiguous in the texts and turn away from what is clear in them, so they went astray from the straight path. And success is from Allah. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
