Translation of the Names of Allah

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 8115 ):
Q: I would like to present to you a question on which the scholars among us have differed. It is something we know from the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) that the attributes of Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) are based on what is established in the texts. So we affirm what Allah the Exalted has affirmed, we deny what Allah the Exalted has denied, and we remain silent regarding what Allah the Exalted has remained silent about, whether in His Book or on the tongue of His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Is it permissible for anyone to name Allah with a name other than His, such as (Khuda) in Persian, or (Khoday) in Pashto, or (God) in English, or other such names? And is the one who mentions Allah with a name other than the one established in the Book and the Sunnah a deviator, as He (Blessed and Exalted is He) said:
And leave [the company of] those who practice deviation concerning His namesوَذَرُوا الَّذِينَ يُلْحِدُونَ فِي أَسْمَائِهِ
[Al-A'raf 7:180]
or not? Some scholars say that these names are permissible, and they cite Gabriel as evidence, saying that (El) is a name for Allah in Hebrew. If it is permissible to change the name in Hebrew, is it also permissible in another language? Is this interpretation acceptable or not? Is it permissible to change the names of Allah to a language other than Arabic or not? Please inform us, may Allah reward you with good.

A: It is permissible to translate the names of Allah for those who do not know the Arabic language into their own language, provided that the translator is proficient in both languages. Just as it is permissible to translate the meanings of the Quranic verses and the Prophetic hadiths for them to help them understand the religion. And success is from Allah. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
