Fatwa No. ( 2844 ):
Q: I hope you will issue a ruling on the authenticity and existence of al-Mahdi who is said to be on earth, and whether there are authentic Prophetic hadiths about him? May Allah reward you.
A: The hadiths indicating the emergence of al-Mahdi are numerous, coming through multiple chains and narrated by a number of the Imams of hadith. A group of scholars have stated that they are mass-transmitted in meaning, among them Abu al-Hasan al-Ajurri , a scholar of the fourth century, and the scholar al-Safarini in his book [Lawa’im al-Anwar al-Bahiyyah], and the scholar al-Shawkani in a treatise he titled [Al-Tawdih fi Tawatur Ahadith al-Mahdi wa al-Dajjal wa al-Masih]. He has well-known signs mentioned in
the hadiths, the most important of which is: , and it is not permissible for anyone to assert that so-and-so, the son of so-and-so, is al-Mahdi until the signs that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) explained in the authentic hadiths are present, the most important of which is what we mentioned, namely that he is the hadith. And success is from Allah. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
