Fatwa No. ( 5730 ):
Q: I received a message from an unknown person at my Saudi phone number in al-Madinah al-Munawwarah , which you will find attached to this letter. As you can see, this message contains four noble verses from the great Book of Allah, to which falsehood does not come from before or behind. These are in the introduction. After that, the sender began to describe many great benefits for whoever prints and sends them, to the point of imagination, within a period of four days. He gave several examples of good that happened to people who did this, as well as several other examples of the calamities that befall those who neglect it. O honorable scholar, I know that we must preserve the Noble Qur'an and act upon it in all circumstances. However, what concerns me is this method described by the sender regarding the great good for those who distribute the message and the great evil for those who do not pay attention to it. I know that good and evil are in the hand of Allah, and nothing befalls you except what Allah has decreed for you. I also recall that several years ago some people circulated a similar message claiming it was from Shaykh Ahmad , one of the gatekeepers of the Messenger of Allah's (peace and blessings be upon him) mosque , and you clarified the truth in the newspapers and stated its ruling. Therefore, I sent this message to your eminence, hoping for your clarification of what you see regarding it and your benefit to me. May Allah reward you for Islam and the Muslims with the best reward?
Islam and the Muslims the best reward?
A: Determining the reward or punishment, whether immediate or deferred, that results from writing or reading verses of the Qur'an is a matter that Allah has exclusively reserved knowledge of, because it is among the hidden secrets of the unseen that Allah has kept to Himself. Therefore, it is not permissible for anyone to speak about it except by a statement from Allah and an explanation from Him through revelation to His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). There is no mention in the Book of Allah or in the Sunnah of His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) — regarding the verses mentioned in the question — encouraging their writing specifically, nor their sending and circulation specifically, nor determining a reward for whoever writes and sends them to others, whether in the Hereafter or in this world, such as protection, wealth, ease of affairs, or relief from distress. Nor is there a threat of punishment for whoever does not write them, such as death, poverty, being struck by an accident, or a calamity, or the like. Whoever determines a reward for whoever writes and sends them, and sets a time for it, has spoken without knowledge of the unseen and said about Allah without knowledge. Allah the Exalted has forbidden that and said:[Al-Isra 17:36], and He said: [Al-A'raf 7:33]. Thus, it is known that calling for this publication and determining the reward and punishment for it is a reprehensible matter that deserves punishment from Allah the Mighty and Majestic, as well as punishment from the authorities, to prevent him from innovating in the religion what Allah has not permitted, and to deter him and others.
And success is from Allah. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
