Fatwa number ( 3206 ):
Q: What is the ruling on those who practice sorcery? That is, those who write verses from the Noble Qur'an and from the names of Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, and sell them to people, saying that this is what protects you . Or when a child is born or falls ill, they write on paper and hang it around his neck, or they give it to students, saying that this is what makes you intelligent and wise, especially in our lands, in Africa, and among some Arabs.
A: It is forbidden to write anything other than the Qur'an and the names of Allah the Exalted on paper or other materials to be hung on sick children, livestock, or the like, in hope of healing, or to be hung on them in hope of protection from diseases, or from the schemes of enemies, or from being struck by the evil eye or envy, or to be hung on students in hope of intelligence, quick memorization, understanding, and the like. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called this shirk (associating partners with Allah) in his saying: , and it is forbidden
to buy it or hang it, and the price paid in exchange for these papers is illicit gain. The rulers must prevent this, discipline those who do it and those who go to them, and make it clear that this is among the amulets that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade, so that they may find the right path and refrain from what is forbidden. As for writing verses from the Qur'an and the names of Allah the Exalted, and the like of that from the correct dhikr (remembrance of Allah) and supplications, there is disagreement among the scholars. Some of the scholars of the Salaf forbade it, while others permitted it. The correct view is that it is not permissible, due to the generality of the hadiths forbidding the hanging of amulets, to block the means to hanging amulets other than from the Qur'an, and to protect the Qur'an and the names of Allah from what is not fitting. And success is from Allah. May Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
