Fatwa No. ( 11104 ):
Q: Here in South Africa , when a young man or young woman reaches the age of 21 (twenty-one), people celebrate, they recite the Noble Qur'an, they cook various types of food, they gather, and they give the person who has reached the age of 21 a key. Are these things permissible in Islam, and what is the ruling on these actions in Islam?
A:What you mentioned regarding the celebration and recitation of the Qur'an when a young man or woman reaches the age of twenty-one has no basis in the Shari'ah; rather, it is a religious innovation and an imitation of the Christians among you.the Christians,It is established from the hadith of'A'ishah(may Allah be pleased with her), that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
He who did any act for which there is no sanction from our behalf, that is to be rejected.من عمل عملاً ليس عليه أمرنا فهو رد
Sahih Muslim 1718b
It was narrated byMuslim ، and Ahmadin [al-Musnad], and Abu DawudAbu Dawud, fromIbn 'Umar(may Allah be pleased with them both), that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
He who copies any people is one of them.من تشبه بقوم فهو منهم
Sunan Abi Dawud 4031Hasan Sahih (Al-Albani)
And success is from Allah. May Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
