Fatwa No. ( 6335 ):
Q: I hope Your Eminence will kindly inform me of the authenticity or weakness of the hadith narrated from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him):
Flee from the leper as you would flee from a lion.
Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 16:270
.

Volume 1: This hadith is part of the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
(There is) no 'Adwa (no contagious disease is conveyed without Allah's permission). nor is there any bad omen (from birds), nor is there any Hamah, nor is there any bad omen in the month of Safar, and one should run away from the leper as one runs away from a lion.
Sahih al-Bukhari 5707
The hadith was narrated by al-Bukhari with his chain in his book [Sahih] in the Book of Medicine (Chapter on Leprosy), and it was also narrated by
Ibn Hibban with the addition "(and no planetary influence), and likewise it was narrated by Abu Nu'aym in Medicine in the hadith of al-A'raj from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) with the wording:
Beware of the leper as one would beware of a lion
Sunan al-Bayhaqi 10:1586
, and it was narrated by Ibn Khuzaymah in the Book of Reliance on A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) with the wording:
There is no contagion, and if you see a leper, flee from him as you would flee from a lion
, and its meaning was narrated by Muslim in the Sahih in the last chapters of Medicine from the hadith of 'Amr ibn al-Shurayd from his father, who said:
there was in the delegation of Thaqif a leper. Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) sent a message to him: We have accepted your allegiance, so you may go.
Sahih Muslim 2231
. The best that has been said about it is the statement of al-Bayhaqi , followed by Ibn al-Salah Ibn al-Qayyim Ibn Rajab Ibn Muflih and others, that his saying: "There is no contagion" is in the sense that the people of the pre-Islamic age of ignorance believed, attributing the action to other than Allah the Exalted, and that these things transmit by their nature; otherwise, Allah may, by His will, make the mixing of a healthy person with one who has some of these diseases a cause for its occurrence; for this reason he said:
one should run away from the leper as one runs away from a lionفر من المجذوم كما تفر من الأسد
Sahih al-Bukhari 5707
, and he said:
A sick person should not be taken to one who is healthy
Sahih Muslim 2221a
, and he said regarding the plague:
If one hears of it in a land, let him not go toward itمن سمع به في أرض فلا يقدم عليه
, and all of this is by the decree of Allah the Exalted. And success is from Allah. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
