Building Rulings on the Positions of the Stars

Machine translationRead the Arabic original

The sixth question of Fatwa No. ( 3543 ):

Q6: What is the ruling on those who time their affairs by the stars, such as when a person says: If this star is in this position, then heavy rains will come.
A6: Building rulings on the positions of the stars, as in the question, is not permissible. This person either believes that the star has an effect in bringing down rain, in which case it is shirk (associating partners with Allah) and kufr (disbelief), or he believes that the only effective agent is Allah alone, but that He has established the custom of rain falling when that star appears, in which case it is haram (forbidden). It is not permissible for a servant to attribute what is specific to Allah to a created being, neither in a literal sense nor in a figurative sense. The basis for this is the generality of the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Among my people there are four characteristics belonging to the pre-Islamic period which they do not abandon: boasting of high rank, reviling other people’s genealogies, seeking rain by the stars, and wailing.أربع في أمتي من أمر الجاهلية لا يتركونهن: الفخر بالأحساب، والطعن في الأنساب، والاستسقاء بالنجوم، والنياحة على الميت
Mishkat al-Masabih 1727
. The hadith
was narrated by Muslim in his Sahih, and the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to his Companions on the morning of a rainy day:
Do you know what your Lord has said?” On their replying that God and His messsenger knew best he told them that He had said, “This morning there were among my servants one who believes in me and one who disbelieves. The one who said, ‘We have been given rain by God’s grace and mercy' is the one who believes in me and disbelieves in the star, but the one who said, ‘We have been given rain by such and such a rainy star’ is the one who disbelieves in me and believes in the star.”
Mishkat al-Masabih 4596
It is agreed upon as authentic from the hadith of Zayd ibn Khalid al-Juhani (may Allah be pleased with him). And success is from Allah. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
