Looking at the horoscope
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The fourth question of Fatwa No. ( 8924 ):
Q4: When a child is born, the father consults one of the shaykhs to look at his horoscope and his name—meaning the name of the newborn. If it suits him, he remains silent; otherwise, he orders it to be changed. We often find people with double names among us. It is authentically reported from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he ordered the change of some ugly names. If the name is not ugly, is it permissible to change it?
A4: First: It is not permissible to look at the horoscope; rather, it is a type of fortune-telling. It is not permissible to change names because they do not suit the horoscope, because that involves believing the fortune-teller and acting on the basis of fortune-telling. Second: It is permissible to change ugly names, following the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in that. There is no harm in changing a name if it is not ugly, provided that this is not done because it does not suit the horoscope or the like, and provided that it does not result in the loss of any person's rights. And success is from Allah. May Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
