Fatwa No. ( 8800 ):
Q: There are those who declare, either in a report or a written statement, that a group of the Salaf are disbelievers, for example: Shah Wali Allah al-Dahlawi , Shah Abdul Qadir Shaykh Abdul Qadir al-Jilani , and others, numbering thirty-three scholars and righteous people. He also says: Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal was an associate of partners with Allah; because he writes in his book, the Book of Prayer: (Faith in the Pool and intercession, faith in Munkar and Nakir and the punishment of the grave, faith in the Angel of Death and the taking of souls, then they return to the bodies in the graves, and they are asked about faith and the oneness of Allah). And Ibn Taymiyyah also writes (And the reports have become widespread regarding the knowledge of the deceased about his family
and the circumstances of his mother and wives in this world, and that this is presented to him, and the reports have come that he sees it as well, and that he knows what is done to him, so he is pleased with what was good and pained by what was ugly, and the souls of the dead gather, and the higher one descends to the lower one, not the reverse). Now, O Shaykh, I ask you: Are these two Imams disbelievers who associate partners with Allah, given these written statements according to the Prophetic Shari'ah? O Shaykh, answer us with a satisfying, detailed answer according to the Prophetic Shari'ah, upon its Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and may Allah reward you with a good reward?

A: Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal and Imam Ahmad ibn Abd al-Halim ibn Taymiyyah are among the great scholars of Islam, and among those who have been attested to for their virtue, and their writings speak to that. They are among the Imams of the people of the Sunnah and the community. And what is mentioned regarding faith in the Pool, intercession, the punishment of the grave, and its bliss, all of this is truth, indicated by the established legal proofs, and the people of the Sunnah and the community have reached consensus on it. And success is from Allah. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
