The tenth question of Fatwa No. ( 5176 ):
Q10: If we have disbeliever (Christian) neighbors, how should we treat them? If they offer us gifts, do we accept them from them? Is it permissible for us to show them our uncovered faces, or for them to see more of us than the face? And is it permissible for us to buy from the Christian sellers?
A10: Treat with kindness those among them who treat you with kindness, even if they are Christians. If they give you a permissible gift, then return the favor to them for it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) accepted a gift from the leader of the Romans, who was a Christian, and accepted a gift from the Jews . And Allah the Exalted said:
(8) Allah does not forbid you from those who do not fight you because of religion and do not expel you from your homes - from being righteous toward them and acting justly toward them. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly. (9) Allah only forbids you from those who fight you because of religion and expel you from your homes and aid in your expulsion - [forbids] that you make allies of them. And whoever makes allies of them, then it is those who are the wrongdoers.
لاَ يَنْهَاكُمُ اللَّهُ عَنِ الَّذِينَ لَمْ يُقَاتِلُوكُمْ فِي الدِّينِ وَلَمْ يُخْرِجُوكُمْ مِنْ دِيَارِكُمْ أَنْ تَبَرُّوهُمْ وَتُقْسِطُوا إِلَيْهِمْ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحِبُّ الْمُقْسِطِينَ (8) إِنَّمَا يَنْهَاكُمُ اللَّهُ عَنِ الَّذِينَ قَاتَلُوكُمْ فِي الدِّينِ وَأَخْرَجُوكُمْ مِنْ دِيَارِكُمْ وَظَاهَرُوا عَلَى إِخْرَاجِكُمْ أَنْ تَوَلَّوْهُمْ وَمَنْ يَتَوَلَّهُمْ فَأُولَئِكَ هُمُ الظَّالِمُونَIt is permissible for you to appear before their women in what is permissible for you to appear in before Muslim women, such as what is uncovered and what is used for adornment in clothing and the like, according to the most correct of the scholars' opinions. And it is permissible for you to buy from them what you need of permissible goods. And success is from Allah. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
