Discussion on the ruling regarding cursing a disbeliever.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : It is close to a discussion, if Allah wills. The question is: I asked you about two or three weeks ago regarding the topic of cursing, specifically cursing a Muslim by name. You answered me and said: If it is permissible to curse an oppressive Muslim by name, then a disbeliever is all the more so. I asked you specifically about cursing a disbeliever by name. I also inquired, as you have taught us, we take from you and from others. I asked one of the students of knowledge, one of your students, about this topic, and he answered me, saying: Cursing is divided into two categories: major cursing, meaning expulsion from the mercy of Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He), and cursing that does not intend expulsion, but rather intends rebuke and reproof for the one who committed this heinous error, like that Companion whom he cursed. It seems to me, as I recall, that you rejected this division from me that day. You said to me: If you want to curse this one or that one, what do you say? I told you: I say, "May Allah curse you," to the person addressed. You said to me: Since the word is the same, then it is one. What is your opinion, O our Shaykh, or what is your view regarding the speech that contradicts your speech? May Allah reward you.

The Shaykh : There is no contradiction.

The questioner : Do you mean you support this kind of division?

The Shaykh : No, I do not support it, but there is no contradiction. I mean: contradiction occurs if I say: It is permissible to curse the oppressor, and he says: It is not permissible. And there is contradiction if he says: Do not use the word "curse," and I say: Use the word "curse." As for cursing in one meaning and cursing in another meaning, first: it is not within the power of man. Second: When I argued for the permissibility, perhaps you remember the story of that neighbor who oppressed his neighbor, and he complained to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so he ordered him to place the goods of his house on the edge of the roads, and he did so. So the people would pass by him and say: What is the matter with you, so-and-so? My neighbor has oppressed me. May Allah fight him! May Allah curse him!

The questioner : And he was a Muslim?

The Shaykh : And he was a Muslim, and more than a Muslim!

The questioner : A Companion.

The Shaykh : A Companion. So the man was hearing it with his ears until the earth became narrow for him despite its vastness, and that was the cause of his repentance. So he went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to say to him: O Messenger of Allah, order my neighbor to return his goods to his house; for the people have cursed me. He said (peace be upon him):
Those in the heavens have cursed you before those on the earth cursed you لقد لَعَنَك مَن في السماء قبل أن يلعنك مَن في الأرض
; so this division that you mentioned just now, does it also apply to the people of the heavens? This is a statement that is not said.

The questioner : They argue, O our Shaykh, that this Companion!

The Shaykh : Leave them and them. Understand what I say and you will be at ease: Is this division that was mentioned just now also said about the people of the heavens who were cursing this oppressor? Think?

The questioner : By Allah, if I want to give an answer, I say: This man, who is the Companion, as you mentioned, I do not think that the angels curse him in the meaning of expulsion from the mercy of the Lord of the Worlds.

The Shaykh: No?

The questioner : Rather, they may curse him!

The Shaykh : And in the meaning of what?

The questioner : In the meaning of deterrence and reproof of his action.

The Shaykh : In the language, cursing in the meaning of deterrence, not cursing. You, it appears, I fear, I fear that you have understood something other than what your companion, whom you are referring to, intended. The word "cursing" is a general word, and its interpretation is: expulsion from the mercy of Allah. But expulsion from the mercy of Allah has degrees. It may be expulsion from the mercy of Allah such that he does not enter Paradise ever, except by the debt and the ages of the ages. And it may be expulsion from the mercy of Allah that he does not enter Paradise with the foremost of the first. And he may not enter Paradise until he enters the Fire and burns and becomes black scorching embers. And he may be saved by intercession or by a means or something similar. But all of this is cursing and expulsion from the mercy of Allah. But the mercy of Allah is contrary to what that Sufi said, a statement by al-Busiri. What did he say: "Perhaps the mercy of my Lord when He divides it *** Comes according to the measure of the sin in the division." Did you understand this verse? Perhaps you are hearing it for the first time, perhaps!

The questioner : The mosque of Shaykh al-Albani himself. Well, Shaykh al-Albani himself is present. This is our Shaykh, wait, Shaykh al-Albani himself is needed. Shaykh al-Albani happened to be in the house and did not find him, so he came to the student of the Shaykh. Now he has returned to the Shaykh himself.

The Shaykh : May Allah reward you.
