What is the ruling on one who prays Zuhr with the intention of shortening it behind an imam who is praying Jumu'ah, while he is a traveler?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : All right, Shaykh, he prays Zuhr with the intention of shortening it behind the imam while the imam is praying Jumu'ah?

The Shaykh : Is it Jumu'ah?

The questioner: Yes.

The Shaykh : I mean, he does not pray Jumu'ah; he wants to pray Zuhr?

The questioner : No; he comes in while they are praying and prays two rak'ahs of Zuhr?

The Shaykh : Why does he not pray Jumu'ah?

The questioner : ... He says it is a recommended practice, Shaykh.

The Shaykh : He says it is a recommended practice?

The questioner : That the recommended practice for a traveler is not to pray Jumu'ah.

The Shaykh : Is that the answer to my question?! Why does he not pray behind the resident imam who is praying Jumu'ah? Why does he not pray Jumu'ah?!

The questioner : He claims—Shaykh—that a traveler may pray Zuhr; the recommended practice is to pray Zuhr and not Jumu'ah; because a traveler has no Jumu'ah.

The Shaykh : Does "he has no Jumu'ah" mean that it is not permissible for him to pray Jumu'ah?

The questioner: No.

The Shaykh : So then?

The questioner : But if he did that?

The Shaykh : No, we do not say that.

Another questioner : O Shaykh!

The Shaykh : Listen, O Shaykh.
The Shaykh : We do not say that he should deliberately oppose the imam, even in his intention. I will clarify this issue for you with another issue: Is Jumu'ah obligatory upon a woman?

The questioner: No.

The Shaykh : All right, if she prays behind the one who is praying Jumu'ah, does she intend Zuhr or does she intend Jumu'ah?

The questioner : Jumu'ah.

The Shaykh : Then Jumu'ah is two rak'ahs, and what is obligatory upon the woman?

The questioner: Four.

The Shaykh : Four; so how is it permissible for her?! It is even more likely that it is permissible for a traveler to pray two rak'ahs with the intention of Jumu'ah than that it is permissible for a woman, who shares with the traveler in the non-obligation of Jumu'ah, while four rak'ahs are obligatory upon her; so it is even more likely that it is not permissible for her. If it is permissible for her to pray two rak'ahs behind the Jumu'ah imam, then it is even more likely that it is permissible for the traveler to pray two rak'ahs with the intention of Jumu'ah. Is that clear?

The questioner : All right, if he prays with the intention of Zuhr, Shaykh?

The Shaykh : It is not permissible, my brother. I tell you: it is not permissible to oppose the imam, not only in the form, but also in the intention—he has no way to do that. And peace be upon you.

The questioner : A final question, O Shaykh.

Another questioner : Welcome, Shaykh, from New York.

The Shaykh : Welcome, how are you? Welcome, welcome, may Allah bless you.

The questioner : How are you?

The Shaykh : I thank Allah for you. Are you residing here now?

The questioner : In Saudi Arabia, in Riyadh.

The Shaykh : Ah, in Riyadh, a visitor, I mean.
The Shaykh : All right, peace be upon you.
