Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : May Allah reward the honorableThe Shaykh : What is the ruling on one who takes money in order to perform Hajj on behalf of another, and his intention was to make a profit from this Hajj, and he was stingy with the expenses of the Hajj, being frugal, and he returned with more than half of the money that was given to him?

The Shaykh : If a person performs Hajj on behalf of another for the sake of money, I fear that Allah will not accept it from him, due to the saying of Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He:
(15) Whoever desires the life of this world and its adornments - We fully repay them for their deeds therein, and they therein will not be deprived. (16) Those are the ones for whom there is not in the Hereafter but the Fire. And lost is what they did therein, and worthless is what they used to do.
[Hud 11:15-16]
. - We seek refuge in Allah - And He, the Exalted, said:
Whoever desires the harvest of the Hereafter - We increase for him in his harvest. And whoever desires the harvest of this world - We give him thereof, but there is not for him in the Hereafter any share.
[Ash-Shuraa 42:20]
. So if you know from yourself that you are taking money to perform Hajj on behalf of another for the sake of the money, do not do it. Do not disappoint yourself and disappoint your brother; leave it. But if you intend to perform Hajj on behalf of another as a kindness to him, because he desires it, and as assistance with what is given to you to perform the rites, then there is nothing wrong with it. And if he gives you something and some of what he gave you remains, it is yours. Except if he says: "Return to me what exceeds the expenses," then it is obligatory for you to return it. Yes.
