The questioner : May Allah reward the honorableThe Shaykh : We performed Hajj five years ago, praise be to Allah, and there were women with us. We left Muzdalifah intending for them to stone the pillars. Before we reached the Jamarat, we feared for their safety, so we kept them back and stoned on their behalf. There was not severe crowding. Then we heard someone say that on the Day of Sacrifice, a woman must stone the pillars herself. What should be done now?

The Shaykh : Yes. Stoning the pillars is part of the rites on the Day of Sacrifice and the days following it. Allah the Exalted said:
And complete the Hajj and 'umrah for Allah وَأَتِمُّوا الْحَجَّ وَالْعُمْرَةَ لِلَّهِ
[Al-Baqarah 2:196]
. It is not permissible for anyone to appoint a proxy to stone the pillars on their behalf, neither on the Day of Sacrifice nor on any other day, except for one who is unable to do so. For example, an elderly woman who is unable to do so, and likewise an elderly man. A sick person, whether male or female, is unable to do so. A young child or a frail person is unable to do so, provided that this does not cause delay. However, if the delay extends into the night, the general ruling is that the matter is broad, and he can stone the pillars himself. If these men had delayed the women until the night and they had stoned the pillars at night, that would have been better. As for what has already passed, if they were negligent, then according to the words of the jurists: it is obligatory for each woman who appointed a proxy to slaughter a fidyah (ransom payment) in Makkah to be distributed to the poor, whether she went herself or appointed a proxy. And I say: the severe crowding that is feared for women is not permissible for a woman to enter into, because that is a hardship for her, and because she will be stoning the pillars while not being aware due to the intensity of the crowding. For example, if one wants to hasten in two days and wishes to stone the pillars from the time of Zawal (midday) and then leave, here it is not possible for a woman to stone the pillars at all; it is dangerous for her. We say: in this case, she appoints a proxy and there is no blame on her. As for other cases, for example, on the eleventh day, it is possible to delay the stoning from Zawal to what? To 'Asr, to the night, to Fajr. So the matter, praise be to Allah, is broad.
Yes.
