Explaining that reviving religious innovations is the killing of the Sunnah

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : And we all know that among the principles Allah (Mighty and Majestic) established in His Book is His saying (Blessed and Exalted is He):
Allah does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacity لَا يُكَلِّفُ اللَّهُ نَفْسًا إِلَّا وُسْعَهَا
[Al-Baqarah 2:286]
. This means that when Allah (Mighty and Majestic) charged His servants with numerous acts of obedience of different forms, shapes, dhikr, and worship, He only charged them and burdened them with what they are capable of, because He has informed us that He does not burden us with what we cannot bear, but only with what we can bear. So, when some people, after Allah (Mighty and Majestic) completed the favor upon us by perfecting the religion, legislated for people many different acts of worship, and some people adopted them, that will divert them from performing similar things that came in the Book and the Sunnah. This is because it is impossible for a person, no matter how much he worships, to combine all the acts of worship brought by the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) and, in addition to that, perform the other acts of worship that were innovated after him (peace be upon him). It is not possible to combine the Sunnah and the bid'ah (religious innovation) because one’s capacity cannot bear it. Therefore, the natural result is that the Muslim, to the extent that he holds on to newly invented matters, to that extent he will turn away from what was prescribed (mashru') among the matters. The righteous Salaf (the earliest generations) noticed this natural fact—that a person cannot combine what he is charged with by the Shari'ah (Islamic sacred law) and what he is charged with by innovation—when they said: “No bid'ah (religious innovation) is innovated except that a Sunnah is killed,” “No bid'ah (religious innovation) is innovated except that a Sunnah is killed.” What is the reason? Because this bid'ah (religious innovation) is an act of worship in excess of the prescribed (mashru') act of worship that a person can bear. So, when he adopts this bid'ah (religious innovation), he will turn away from its counterpart from the Sunnah. Therefore, it is obligatory and binding upon us, first, to appreciate this favor that Allah has bestowed upon us, and second, to respond to it by not drawing near to Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) with anything that people have innovated after that, regardless of their intentions and purposes. And we respond to the saying of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) in his Friday sermon and elsewhere:
Avoid novelties, for every novelty is an innovation, and every innovation is an error وإياكم ومحدثات الأمور ؛ فإن كل محدثة بدعة ، وكل بدعة ضلالة ، وكل ضلالة في النار
Sunan Abi Dawud 4607Sahih (Al-Albani)
. This is what came to my weak mind to present to you on this blessed night, if Allah wills.
The student : Praise be to Allah, and blessings and peace be upon His servant and Messenger Muhammad. And after that: We thank the shaykh (a scholar or teacher) for this introduction. We have questions, if Allah wills, which we will present. Some of them are somewhat methodological regarding our brothers the doctors, and then we will move on to other questions, if Allah wills, in various areas that are currently before us.
