Explaining the importance of Allah the Exalted’s favor upon the Muslims by completing the religion in His saying

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh: Praise is to Allah; we praise Him, seek His help, and seek His forgiveness. We seek refuge in Allah from the evils of our own selves and from the badness of our deeds. Whomsoever Allah guides, none can misguide, and whomsoever He leaves to misguide, none can guide. And I bear witness that there is no deity but Allah alone, with no partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and His Messenger,
O you who have believed, fear Allah as He should be feared and do not die except as Muslims [in submission to Him].
[Ali 'Imran 3:102]
,
O mankind, fear your Lord, who created you from one soul and created from it its mate and dispersed from both of them many men and women. And fear Allah, through whom you ask one another, and the wombs. Indeed Allah is ever, over you, an Observer.
[An-Nisa 4:1]
,
(70) O you who have believed, fear Allah and speak words of appropriate justice. (71) He will [then] amend for you your deeds and forgive you your sins. And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly attained a great attainment.
[Al-Ahzab 33:70-71]
. As for what follows:
Indeed, the best of speech is the speech of Allah, the best of guidance is the guidance of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), and the worst of matters are their innovations. Every innovation is a religious innovation, every religious innovation is misguidance, and every misguidance is in the Fire. And after that:
In my opinion, it is known to you all that our blessed Salafi call, by the permission of Allah Blessed and Exalted, is based upon the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). We should remember on this occasion that among the completion of the favor of Allah Blessed and Exalted upon all Muslims is that He made the religion of Islam complete and perfect, and He favored us, the Muslims, with this favor by His saying Blessed and Exalted:
This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion.
[Al-Ma'idah 5:3]
The importance of this verse, in terms of what it contains of informing the Muslims that Islam and the religion have been completed and perfected, is that there is no need for any Muslim after this completion and perfection to add anything to this religion. It is as if Allah (Mighty and Majestic) in this verse relieved the Muslims from exhausting themselves in legislating dhikr and acts of worship to draw near to Allah Blessed and Exalted, or to increase their nearness to Him. He sufficed them from that with this verse
This day I have perfected for you your religion
[Al-Ma'idah 5:3]
to the end of it. It is very regrettable that many Muslims, especially in this time in the twentieth century, do not realize this great favor that He, Exalted is He, favored this Ummah with in this verse, while we find individuals who were not from this Ummah who recognized the importance of this favor from Allah (Mighty and Majestic) upon the Ummah. It was reported in “Sahih al-Bukhari” that a scholar from among the Jewish scholars came to 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: “O Commander of the Faithful, if a verse from the Book of Allah had been revealed to us, the Jews, we would have made the day of its revelation a festival.” He said: “What is it?” He said:
This day I have perfected for you
[Al-Ma'idah 5:3]
to the end of the verse. Then 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “It was indeed revealed on a day of festival. It was revealed to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on a Friday while he was at 'Arafah.”
A festival upon a festival. Why did this Jew, or this scholar from among the Jews, say that if this verse had been revealed to them, they would have made the day of its revelation a festival? Because he noticed this meaning that I tried to make you aware of, which is that Allah (Mighty and Majestic) favored the Ummah with this verse by completing the religion for them, thus relieving them from engaging in elaborations and deriving or legislating dhikr and daily recitations beyond what the Messenger (may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him) brought. Our Messenger (may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him) confirmed this meaning in an authentic hadith narrated by Imam al-Shafi'i in his book known as al-Risalah, and by Imam al-Tabarani and others, that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
I have not left anything that brings you closer to Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) except that I have commanded you with it, and I have not left anything that distances you from Allah and brings you closer to the Fire except that I have forbidden you from it
This hadith clarifies and explains the previous verse from the Qur'an. He said:
I have not left anything that brings you closer to Allah without commanding you to do it, and I have not left anything that distances you from Allah and brings you closer to the Fire without forbidding you from it.
So there remains no room for anyone to come with new legislations and acts of worship by which a Muslim draws near to Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He); because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) left no room for one to add to obedience and worship. For this reason, the scholars said in defining bid'ah (religious innovation) in the religion, whose condemnation came in many hadiths of the Messenger (may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him), such as his saying:
'A'isha reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: He who innovates things in our affairs for which there is no valid (reason) (commits sin) and these are to be rejected.
Sahih Muslim 1718a
They said in defining bid'ah: It is the matter that occurred after the Messenger (peace be upon him) with the intention of increasing nearness to Allah. Bid'ah in the religion is what a Muslim innovates for nothing other than that he wants to increase his nearness to Allah. So his intention is contrary to what preceded from the verse and the hadith, because the Messenger (peace be upon him), as you heard, said:
I have not left anything that brings you closer to Allah without commanding you to do it.
How does any Muslim need, after this clarification and explanation from him (peace and blessings be upon him), to come with a new act of worship intending to increase his nearness to Allah Blessed and Exalted, as long as the means of nearness, the recommended and prescribed matters, have come from him (peace and blessings be upon him) complete and perfect?
