The Shaykh : The hadith that follows is also authentic, and it is His saying:
And from Mahmud ibn Lubayd, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
When Allah loves a people, He tests them. So whoever is patient, patience is for him, and whoever is impatient, impatience is for him. إذا أحب الله قوماً ابتلاهم فمن صبر فله الصبر ومن جزع فله الجزع
It was narrated by Ahmad, and its narrators are trustworthy. Mahmud ibn Lubayd saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), and there is a difference of opinion regarding whether he heard from him.
Here is a brief pause concerning the science of terminology, the terminology of hadith. The author (may Allah have mercy on him) said regarding the narrator of this hadith, Mahmud ibn Lubayd, that he saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and there is a difference of opinion regarding whether he heard from him. The fact that he saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) establishes his status as a Companion, because everyone who saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while believing in him is one of his Companions; this is the terminology of the scholars of hadith. Then he mentions a disagreement regarding whether he heard directly from him (peace and blessings be upon him) or not. The meaning of mentioning the disagreement is that it was said that he heard from him (peace and blessings be upon him), and it was said that he did not hear. This disagreement does not harm us, because if the stronger position is that he heard from him (peace and blessings be upon him), the matter is clear. And if the stronger position is that he did not hear from him, then there is also no harm in this hadith or in the weakness of its chain, because it would be a mursal report from a Companion. The scholars of the Sunnah agreed that a mursal report from a Companion is a proof. That is, if a Companion narrates from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) without having heard it from him, its ruling is validity. This is unlike if a Successor who did not see the Messenger (peace be upon him) narrates and says, "The Messenger of Allah said," in which case the hadith is considered broken and becomes weak. In contrast, if a Companion narrates from the Messenger (peace be upon him), even if that Companion did not hear it from him, it is considered valid. This is because the Companions used to narrate from one another, and all the Companions are trustworthy and upright. One does not hesitate, or have any doubt in one's mind, that this Companion narrated from a weak man, because all the Companions are upright. Therefore, this hadith is authentic, and this disagreement regarding whether he heard from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) or not does not affect it. Moreover, its meaning is established in many of the hadiths that we are currently reciting.
