The Shaykh : The first hadith is his statement: It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) who said: Riyad as-Salihin 1793 It was narrated by al-Bukhari, Muslim, and others.
We discussed the first clause, which is associating partners with Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He). We mentioned that this trait, as it comes in other hadiths, is the greatest of the major sins. It is the first of these seven major sins, and there are many major sins, but the first of these seven is the greatest of the major sins: associating partners with Allah (Mighty and Majestic). It has come in some authentic hadiths, such as the hadith of Abdullah ibn Mas'ud, where he said:.
So we explained in the previous lesson that shirk (associating partners with Allah) is of three types: shirk in lordship, shirk in worship or servitude, and shirk in attributes.
And we spoke about these three types in some detail, and we concluded that a Muslim does not truly become a monotheist, fulfilling the reality of the testimony that there is no god but Allah, unless he disavows in belief and action these three types of shirk: shirk in lordship, shirk in worship, and shirk in attributes.
And we mentioned that these three types of shirk are opposed by three other types of tawhid (the oneness of Allah). Each type of these three types of tawhid contradicts a type of those three types of shirk. So tawhid is: tawhid al-rububiyyah (oneness of lordship), tawhid al-uluhiyyah (oneness of worship) or servitude, and tawhid al-asma' wa al-sifat (oneness of the names and attributes). Whoever believes that Allah (Mighty and Majestic) has a peer in His essence, like the polytheist Zoroastrians who claim there is a creator of good and a creator of evil, these are polytheists. Of what type of shirk? The first, the type of lordship. These people did not believe in the existence of one Lord and Creator.
And this is the greatest and clearest type of shirk in the world. So if a person believes that Allah (Mighty and Majestic) has no peer and no partner in His essence, this is not sufficient for him, because the polytheists were monotheists in tawhid al-rububiyyah (oneness of lordship), as we mentioned in the previous lesson. So he must add to it tawhid of the second type, which is tawhid al-uluhiyyah (oneness of worship) or servitude. And the meaning of that is: you, O human being, after you have believed that Allah (Mighty and Majestic) is One in His essence and there is no creator with Him, you must believe and realize in yourself that He also has no partner in His worship. You must not worship with Allah another god or other gods. If you, may Allah forbid it, do any of that, you have broken tawhid al-uluhiyyah (oneness of worship) or servitude, and you have fallen into shirk of the second type: which is shirk in servitude or worship.
That is: your first tawhid, tawhid al-rububiyyah (oneness of lordship), has not benefited you at all, because you did not make Allah (Mighty and Majestic) unique in His worship and in His divinity. This second meaning is what the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) aimed at in the previous hadith, the hadith of Ibn Mas'ud, when he said: That is: that you worship with Allah another god, whom you believe is the One who alone took charge of your creation, your provision, and so on.
Therefore, it is not fitting for this person who believes that Allah is the sole Creator to worship other than Him, because that means he has given worship to one who does not deserve it. Only the Lord of the worlds (Blessed and Exalted is He) deserves it.
Likewise, we said regarding the third type of shirk, which is shirk in attributes. You must make Allah (Mighty and Majestic) unique in His attributes, just as you make Him unique in His worship, and just as you make Him unique in His essence. If you believe that a person, however high and exalted he may be, possesses a type or attribute of the attributes of Allah (Mighty and Majestic), your tawhid of Allah in His essence and tawhid in worship will not benefit you at all. Because you must also make Him unique in His attributes. If you believe that there is someone who resembles Him in one of His attributes, you have committed shirk and your deeds are nullified.
These details show you the importance of understanding tawhid in its three types, and the three types of shirk that contradict them, so that you can avoid this shirk, which was the first thing the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered you to avoid in this authentic hadith:.
Avoid the seven destructive things." It was asked: (by those present): "What are they, O Messenger of Allah?" He replied, "Associating anyone or anything with Allah in worship; practising sorcery, killing of someone without a just cause whom Allah has forbidden, devouring the property of an orphan, eating of usury, fleeing from the battlefield and slandering chaste women who never even think of anything touching chastity and are good believers.
