The Shaykh : The first hadith is an authentic hadith. It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who said:
Avoid the seven destructive sins اجتنبوا السبع الموبقات
. They said: O Messenger of Allah, what are they? He said:
To assign partner to Allah, magic, to kill a soul (man) which is prohibited by Allah except for which is due, to take usury, to consume the property of an orphan, to retreat on the day of the battle, and to slander chaste women, indiscreet but believing.
Sunan Abi Dawud 2874Sahih (Al-Albani)
. It was narrated by al-Bukhari, Muslim, and others. The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) mentions to us in this authentic hadith from the known sins that are the greatest of major sins, or a large portion of the greatest of major sins. As for the greatest of major sins absolutely, it is the first destructive sin that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) began by mentioning in this hadith, which is shirk (associating partners with Allah) (Blessed and Exalted is He). Here, we must pause to remind those who have knowledge but may be subject to forgetfulness and distraction, and to inform those who have not yet learned the types of shirk, for the tawhid (the oneness of Allah) of the Muslim is not completed until he first knows them fully and correctly, and then implements the command of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) in this hadith:
Avoid the seven destructive sins اجتنبوا السبع الموبقات
. So the first destructive sin among these seven is shirk, and shirk is divided into three categories if we look at the linguistic meaning of the word shirk.
