What is the ruling on one who placed a bandage on a wound while he was in a state of major ritual impurity, then performed the full ritual bath with the bandage on, then removed it and did not wipe over the area, and then prayed?

The questioner : He says: What is the ruling on one who placed a bandage on a wound while he was in a state of major ritual impurity, then performed the full ritual bath with the bandage on, then removed it and did not wipe over the area, and then prayed?

The Shaykh : There is no blame on him, because when he performed the full ritual bath, this bandage was on him. However, he must pass his hand over it to be considered as having wiped it. If he wiped it, his ritual purity is complete, even if he removes it afterwards, he remains in a state of ritual purity.

The questioner : He says: He did not wipe over it, O Shaykh.

The Shaykh : We do not know; perhaps the water passed over it. If the water passes over it, some scholars say: if the wiped area is washed, that suffices in place of wiping. Some say: washing the wiped area does not suffice in place of wiping. Some say: if he passed his hand over it, there is no harm; otherwise, there is. An example of this is the head. For instance, if a person performs a normal ablution and places his head under "the spout" until his hair is filled with water, but he does not pass his hand over it, it does not suffice, because this is an action for which there is no command from Allah and His Messenger. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
He who did any act for which there is no sanction from our behalf, that is to be rejected. من عمل عملاً ليس عليه أمرنا فهو رد
Sahih Muslim 1718b
. This is regarding ablution. As for the full ritual bath, it suffices, because in the full ritual bath there is nothing wiped except the cast. Some say: if he passed his hand over it when washing it, it suffices. Some say: it suffices absolutely. But the precaution is: that wiping the wiped area is necessary. Yes.
