The questioner : His other question says: If a man applies a patch to his body to treat an illness in any part of his body, and he is required to perform ghusl, is it sufficient for him to perform tayammum with dust? Please give us a ruling. And is ghusl alone sufficient without performing wudu? Please give us a ruling. May Allah reward us with good.
The Shaykh : Yes, we say that if there is a patch on any part of his body that he has applied out of necessity, he should wipe over it when he performs ghusl or when he performs wudu, if it is on the limbs of wudu. This wiping takes the place of washing, just as wiping over leather socks on the feet takes the place of washing them. If he wipes over them, it suffices for him instead of tayammum, which is the application of dust according to the common people. He does not combine tayammum and wiping, because that would be combining two purifications, each of which is a substitute for the other, and one does not combine the substitute with the thing being substituted.
And based on this, we say: If you are in a state of major ritual impurity and the patch is on your chest, for example, or on your back, wipe over it when you perform ghusl, and that will suffice for you instead of tayammum, and your purification will be complete.
The questioner : Yes, may Allah reward you.
The Shaykh : Is there a second question?
The questioner : No, he has several questions remaining that will come, if Allah wills.
