Cupping and fasting
Question: What is cupping and what is its ruling? Does performing it break the ablution and invalidate the fast of the one fasting, or not?
Answer: Cupping is a type of treatment, which is the extraction of blood using a cupping vessel. It invalidates the fast of the one fasting according to the correct of the two opinions of the scholars.Because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) says:, so cupping invalidates the fast of the one fasting according to the correct of the two opinions of the scholars because of this hadith and others.
Likewise, it breaks the ablution if a large amount of blood comes out from it.
Is it among the permissible things of fasting or among its invalidators? Please inform us of that, may Allah reward you.
Answer: As for drawing blood from the one fasting, this invalidates his fast if it is a large amount. So if blood is drawn from him for donation to a blood bank, for example, or to treat a patient who needs blood transfusion, and a quantity of his blood is drawn, then that has an effect and invalidates his fast like cupping. Cupping is established by explicit text, and the established text from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), narrated by many of the Companions, is that cupping invalidates the fast of the one fasting. Likewise, drawing blood is like it; if it is in a large quantity, it invalidates the fast.
As for the issue of injections that are injected into the body of the one fasting, which are needles, if they are nutritional injections, there is no doubt that they invalidate the fast, because they take the place of food and drink in activating and nourishing the body. So they take the ruling of food and drink. Likewise, if they are non-nutritional injections that are taken for medicine and treatment and are taken through the vein, the path of the vein, then these also invalidate the fast, because they travel with the blood and reach the stomach and have an effect on the body like the effect of food and drink. Just as if he swallowed pills through the mouth, they would invalidate his fast, so likewise if the medicine is taken through injections, this also affects his fast.
As for injections that are taken in the muscle and not in the vein, and are not nutritional, some scholars granted a dispensation for these, but what I see is that they take the ruling of the rest of the injections, because they have an effect on the body and have an action in the body. So they are like taking medicine through the blood. There is no difference between taking medicine through the muscle
and taking it through the mouth, because each one penetrates into the body and reaches the organs of the body, and finds for it an effect and activation in his body. This is among the things that invalidate the fast.
So it is better for the one fasting not to be lenient in these matters. And if he is sick and needs to take medicines and injections, he takes them because he is sick, and Allah granted a dispensation for the sick person to break his fast, so he takes them and makes up this day, considering that he is sick.
As for if he is in no need of them and is able to postpone them until the night, then it is not permissible for him to take them during the day of fasting.
