The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Jabir reported:
He used to observe prayer, and we then went (back) to our camels and gave them rest. 'Abdullah made this addition in his narration: "Till the sun passed the meridian. كان رسول الله - صلى الله عليه وسلم - يصلي الجمعة ثم نذهب إلى جمالنا فنريحها حين تزول الشمس
Sahih Muslim 858b
It was narrated by Ahmad, Muslim, and al-Nasa'i.
The Hanbali school cited this hadith and others to argue that the time for the Jumu'ah prayer extends from the beginning of the time for the 'Id prayer to the end of the time for the Zuhr prayer. What is your comment on this? Answer: The position of Imam Ahmad is the correct one in this issue, and this hadith is clear evidence for it. If they were praying Jumu'ah and then going to rest their camels when the sun passed its zenith, when was the khutbah on Friday and when was the prayer? Naturally, it was before the sun passed its zenith. There are explicit texts stating that they used to pray, and that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and the Rightly Guided Caliphs after him used to pray Jumu'ah before the sun passed its zenith. This is not a strict necessity, but rather a permissible matter. It is permissible to pray Jumu'ah before the sun passes its zenith. I have discussed this issue in detail in a printed treatise from long ago, titled "The Beneficial Answers to the Questions of the University Mosque Committee." There, I addressed the many rulings concerning the Jumu'ah prayer, including this specific issue. So whoever wants the details should refer to that treatise.
