What is the ruling on growing hair long?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : ... .

The Shaykh: I mean, like my case?

The questioner : ... .

The Shaykh: Yes, what is the matter? I mean, if I say it is like my case, do you think I am exposing my situation? No, I am speaking about my reality, and I will answer you. Because the beard is obligatory, whereas growing the hair long is not obligatory; it is a dispensation. We are saying that it is a dispensation. So, if one grows it long, we have no objection to him, and if one cuts it or shaves it completely, we have no objection to him either. Thus, growing the hair long or cutting it is a matter of custom. As for letting the beard grow, it is among the obligations in worship. Therefore, the scholars and the people of religion strive with the utmost effort to let the beard grow, because letting it grow is obligatory, and shaving the beard is open sinfulness. But do not make trouble with your husbands, because they will order you to do something, and you will order them to do things. The important point is that shaving the beard is open sinfulness, and letting it grow is obligatory. As for growing the hair long or not growing it long, it is a matter of choice. Therefore, he (peace be upon him) said:
Shave it all or leave it all. احلقوه كله ، أو اتركوه كله
Sunan Abi Dawud 4195Sahih (Al-Albani)
So, there is no obligatory command in this matter, unlike what came regarding the beard. Therefore, you see, or you and others see, that the scholars who still hold fast to the Sunnah or the obligations have beards, but they do not grow their hair long, because growing the hair long is not obligatory like growing the beard.

The questioner : ... .

The Shaykh: Yes, advise them.
