Continuation of the explanation of the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him): (… and whoever is consulted by his Muslim brother and advises him with other than what is right has betrayed him).

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Then he said in the second paragraph:
Anyone who gives his Muslim brother misguided advice when they consult him has betrayed them.
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 259
.
In this paragraph lies the point of the author’s citing this good hadith. Since he had established the obligation of consultation among Muslims, both rulers and the ruled, he followed that with a hadith that completes the previous chapter. This hadith indicates that it is obligatory for the advisor to give the one seeking advice counsel, guidance, and what is good. Whoever does not advise him with that guidance is sinful, because it is obligatory, as we passed with in the previous lesson, that
The advisor is trusted.
. This is a part of a hadith we have encountered in the past. The meaning of "trusted" is that it is obligatory upon him to fulfill the trust. The trust that is upon him, meaning upon the advisor, to fulfill is sincerity to the one seeking advice in it. Here, in this hadith, it confirms the previous hadith:
The advisor is trusted.
. If he fulfills the trust, which is counsel, he has fulfilled the obligation. If he does not fulfill the trust, meaning he advises him with other than what is right, i.e., other than what is correct, he has betrayed him, meaning he did not fulfill the trust. Therefore, the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) went to the extent of emphasizing the fulfillment of the trust until he said:
Fulfill the trust for the one who entrusted you, and do not cheat the one who cheated you.
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1264Da'if (Darussalam)
. If this advisor, whom the one seeking advice consulted, had previously been consulted by the one seeking advice and he betrayed him, it is not permissible for this advisor, whom the one seeking advice previously betrayed and who is now the advisor, to betray him. Rather, it is upon him to advise him and guide him to the best of what he knows for him. Therefore, this virtue and this characteristic, which is advising people with what is good, was the nature of the prophets and their duty with all their nations, as indicated by the hadith of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) when he said:
It was the duty of every Prophet that has gone before me to guide his followers to what he knew was good for them
Sahih Muslim 1844a
.
Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Allah did not send any prophet but shepherded sheep." His companions asked him, "Did you do the same?" The Prophet (ﷺ) replied, "Yes, I used to shepherd the sheep of the people of Mecca for some Qirats."
Sahih al-Bukhari 2262
Meaning: it is obligatory upon him
to guide his followers to what he knew was good for them
Sahih Muslim 1844a
. Similarly, it is obligatory upon every advisor, when he is consulted about a matter, to guide the one seeking advice to the best of what he knows for him. If he does not do that, he has betrayed him. Thus, it has become clear to us from the previous chapter and the chapter we are in that shura, meaning the exchange of opinions in matters that relate to Muslims, individuals and groups, is an obligatory matter in principle, but it is not obligatory in every matter. The second thing is that the advisor is trusted, so it is obligatory upon him to present counsel to the one seeking advice. If he does not do so and orders him with other than what is right, he has betrayed him, and this betrayal is, of course, among the forbidden things in Islam.
