The questioner : Advice, O our Shaykh, may Allah be pleased with you. A final piece of advice in which you advise the young men who think they are committed.
The Shaykh : May Allah bless you. My advice to you all, and my advice to them first, is that they seek knowledge. Knowledge is of two types: necessary and non-necessary. In jurisprudential terms, this is an individual obligation (fard 'ayn) and a collective obligation (fard kifayah). It is obligatory for every Muslim to learn the individual obligation knowledge that leads to the rectification of his worship. Prayer is a general obligation for every adult Muslim, as is fasting. However, zakah and Hajj are not obligatory except for those in whom the conditions are met, as the Exalted said:[Ali 'Imran 3:97]. As for zakah: whoever is wealthy and not poor, it is obligatory for this category to learn how to perform Hajj, how to fast, how to pay zakah, and so on. As for the broad knowledge, that is a collective obligation; if some people fulfill it, it drops off the rest. So each of these people, according to his capacity, should learn knowledge to rectify his work, as the Exalted said: [Az-Zumar 39:9]. And as the Exalted said: [Al-Mujadila 58:11]. Then, after every Muslim strives to seek knowledge in its two categories—something that is necessary for everyone, which is the individual obligation knowledge, and a category that is necessary for some of them and not others, which is the collective obligation—they should be reminded to seek knowledge for the sake of Allah, to rectify their work thereby, and to be sincere in that to their Lord, as Allah Mighty and Majestic said: [Yusuf 12:108]. And in the other verse: [Al-Kahf 18:110], meaning: in accordance with the knowledge, and the knowledge is the Book and the Sunnah. [Al-Kahf 18:110], meaning: so that he may be sincere in his worship, in his knowledge, and in his work. And peace be upon you, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings.
