Chapter "Chapter on the Mercy Shown to Animals" Explanation of the Hadith of 'Abd Allah ibn 'Amr ibn al-'As

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Whom Allah guides, no one can mislead, and whom He leaves to mislead, no one can guide. And I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, alone, with no partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and His Messenger.
O you who have believed, fear Allah as He should be feared and do not die except as Muslims [in submission to Him]. يا أيها الذين آمنوا اتقوا الله حق تقاته ولا تموتن إلا وأنتم مسلمون
[Ali 'Imran 3:102]

O mankind, fear your Lord, who created you from one soul and created from it its mate and dispersed from both of them many men and women. And fear Allah, through whom you ask one another, and the wombs. Indeed Allah is ever, over you, an Observer. يا أيها الناس اتقوا ربكم الذي خلقكم من نفس واحدة وخلق منها زوجها وبث منهما رجالا كثيرا ونساء واتقوا الله الذي تساءلون به والأرحام إن الله كان عليكم رقيبا
[An-Nisa 4:1]

(70) O you who have believed, fear Allah and speak words of appropriate justice. (71) He will [then] amend for you your deeds and forgive you your sins. And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly attained a great attainment. يا أيها الذين آمنوا اتقوا الله وقولوا قولا سديدا يصلح لكم أعمالكم ويغفر لكم ذنوبكم ومن يطع الله ورسوله فقد فاز فوزا عظيما
[Al-Ahzab 33:70-71]
.
As for what follows:
For the best of speech is the speech of Allah, and the best of guidance is the guidance of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), and the worst of matters are their newly invented ones, and every newly invented matter is a religious innovation, and every religious innovation is misguidance, and every misguidance is in the Fire.
As for what follows:
We are still in "Chapter on the Mercy Shown to Animals" and we are now discussing the eighty-third hadith after the three hundred.
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated it with his authentic chain of narration.
From 'Abd Allah ibn 'Amr ibn al-'As, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who said:
Show mercy and you will be shown mercy. Forgive and Allah will forgive you. Woe to the vessels that catch words (i.e. the ears). Woe to those who persist and consciously continue in what they are doing. ارحموا ترحموا واغفروا يغفر الله لكم ويل لأقماع القول ويل للمصرين الذين يصرون على ما فعلوا وهم يعلمون
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 380
.
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) cited this hadith in this chapter based on the generality of his saying (peace be upon him):
Show mercy and you will be shown mercy. ارحموا ترحموا
. He cited it in the Chapter on the Mercy Shown to Animals because his saying (peace be upon him):
Show mercy and you will be shown mercy. ارحموا ترحموا
encompasses mercy for all created beings. Open the door with any key you like and let it in.
Show mercy and you will be shown mercy. ارحموا ترحموا
also includes mercy toward animals, and therefore the author cited it under the Chapter on the Mercy Shown to Animals. Then he said (may Allah's prayers and peace be upon him):
Forgive and Allah will forgive you. واغفروا يغفر الله لكم
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 380
. This is as mentioned previously in a past lesson from the saying of 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: "Whoever does not forgive will not be forgiven". And we said at that time that this phrase could be that 'Umar ibn al-Khattab analogized it to his saying (peace be upon him):
He who does not show tenderness will not be shown tenderness. من لا يرحم لا يرحم
Sunan Abi Dawud 5218Sahih (Al-Albani)
. It is possible that he heard it from the Messenger (peace be upon him) but did not attribute it to him. Now here the hadith comes from the narration of 'Abd Allah ibn 'Amr ibn al-'As, attributed to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), with the wording:
Forgive and Allah will forgive you. واغفروا يغفر الله لكم
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 380
. Just as Allah (Mighty and Majestic) reciprocates the mercy of His servant toward one of His creations by forgiving this servant, so He reciprocates the forgiveness of a servant toward one of His creations by our Lord (Mighty and Majestic) forgiving this servant. That is, the reward is of the same kind as the deed.
Show mercy and you will be shown mercy. Forgive and Allah will forgive you. Woe to the vessels that catch words ارحموا ترحموا واغفروا يغفر الله لكم ويل لأقماع القول
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 380
This is Arabic that we must understand. Al-aqma' is the plural of qum'. What we call in the colloquial language qum', and its word in Arabic is qim'. So the plural of qim' is aqma'. The known qum' is the conical-shaped vessel that is placed on a jar or a large container to fill this container with water or some liquid through it. So the Messenger (peace be upon him) says:
Woe to the funnels of the statement ويل لأقماع القول
. It is a very eloquent simile. He calls for woe, and woe is a valley in Hellfire from whose horror of the fire within it Hellfire seeks refuge. So the Messenger (peace be upon him) calls for woe for this type of people, likening them to funnels, meaning that they hear the speech but do not retain it. So the speech passes through them like water entering a funnel; nothing is retained, nothing remains in it; it enters from here and exits from there, it goes... The second one, he said:
Woe to the funnels of the statement ويل لأقماع القول
, meaning for people who are like funnels, meaning speech flows through them and they hear it, either like what the colloquial speaker says, it enters from here and exits from here.
So his saying "funnels of speech" is a metaphor for the listener of speech and words who does not retain it or comprehend it, and consequently does not act upon it. The Messenger (peace be upon him) likened these people to funnels, which are merely a path for the passage of speech and words, and the funnel does not benefit from what passes through it. Oil may pass through it, or ghee, or any beneficial thing, but it will not benefit from what passes through it. So the Messenger (peace be upon him) called down upon this type of people who hear the speech and then do not follow it. "Funnels of speech" is a very eloquent metaphor for these people who hear the words and then do not take a lesson from them or benefit from them. Similarly, he called down upon another type of people, saying:
Woe to those who persist and consciously continue in what they are doing. ويل للمصرين الذين يصرون على ما فعلوا وهم يعلمون
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 380
. This is also a supplication against another type of people who are arrogant and proud, persisting in their error. In the expression of the colloquial speaker: "Your eye was your eye". He knows his state, that he is wrong, so he stubbornly denies it and persists, and they know it. The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) also called down woe upon these people.
