The Shaykh : As for the second question, it says: It has become widespread in our present time among the general public to hang decorative and ornamental panels of some verses of the Noble Qur'an, such as the Verse of the Throne and "Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah" and others. They use as an excuse the presence of Qur'anic verses on the walls of mosques and also on the curtain of the Sacred Ka'bah. Is the presence of those verses in mosques a religious innovation? The answer is: Yes, hanging verses on the walls of mosques, especially if they are in ornate and decorated calligraphy with green and yellow, all of this is among the religious innovations that occurred after the first three centuries, which are attested to be the best. Mosques must be built with simplicity and by avoiding all that is adornment. This is a long discussion, and it is sufficient to remind you of what al-Bukhari narrated in his "Sahih": "That 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), when he expanded the Prophet's Mosque and renewed some of its construction, said to the builder: Shelter the people from the heat and the cold, and do not make it red or yellow .
; because the purpose of building mosques is not showing off, as the Christians do with their churches and synagogues, but rather it is to shelter people and gather them to perform the prayers that Allah has made obligatory for them in congregation. So if verses are written in the mosques in a decorated manner, they fall under this prohibition, which is innovating in the religion. But without a doubt, it cannot be said that the ruling in homes is the same as in mosques and is transferred to them. But regarding what we are answering, which is hanging verses in homes, this is also a religious innovation. The reason for this is that the verses were not revealed to be hung on walls, but rather they were revealed so that, at the very least, their meanings and effects settle in the hearts of the believers if they are all able to do so. And this is the reality: that they memorize the Qur'an in their chests as a hidden treasure. This is not obligatory, but what is obligatory is that the meanings of the Qur'an, especially those that every Muslim must know, settle in their souls. And Satan, in his scheme against the children of Adam, often diverts them from the work that Allah has made obligatory upon them to formal matters, making them think that this formal matter is sufficient for them and compensates for the work. Of course, Satan gradually leads them until the person does not notice the danger they are falling into until after a long time, and after the person has been stamped with Satan's mark and led astray by his leading, and then it is difficult to go back or to resume their correct life. Take an example from our reality today: among many Muslim women, unfortunately, there is nothing left of what indicates their Islam except that they hang a small gold or gilded Qur'an on their chests. There is nothing left that distinguishes them from the disbelieving Christian woman except that this Muslim woman hangs a Qur'an and that one hangs a cross.
Likewise, before that, Satan gradually led the Christians astray and diverted them from acting upon their Gospel. First, in their belief that 'Isa was crucified. Then he did not leave them at this misguidance, which is sufficient misguidance, but rather he depicted and adorned for them to take this cross as their symbol and to hang it on their chests. And in verification or as evidence of his saying (peace be upon him) in the authentic hadith:Sahih al-Bukhari 3456 to the end of the hadith: These women, who are Muslim in name only, have returned to imitating the disbelieving Christian women by placing a Qur'an image as a symbol on their chests. What benefit is this to them when they have disbelieved, either in belief or in action, and the worst of the two is bitter? They have disbelieved in what is in the Qur'an, such as His saying (Blessed and Exalted is He): [Al-Ahzab 33:59] They have abandoned acting upon the Qur'an, and this is like hanging the gilded Qur'an on their chests. This is Islam. Satan, this is his function: to occupy Muslims, men and women, with formal matters and divert them from practical realities. Therefore, the righteous Salaf (may Allah be pleased with them) were very, very much concerned with avoiding newly invented matters, even if their appearance is good. But the truth is that the matter is as he said (peace be upon him), and as we always and forever remind you at the beginning of our lessons: Sunan an-Nasa'i 1578Sahih (Darussalam). And here are questions, and by Allah they are blessed this time, and if Allah wills, in the next lesson we will present the answer to them by the permission of Allah. And peace be upon you.
