Rulings on the Zakah of Gold and Silver.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : The third: Gold and silver. The texts regarding them are general. Allah the Exalted said:
And those who hoard gold and silver وَالَّذِينَ يَكْنِزُونَ الذَّهَبَ وَالْفِضَّةَ
[At-Tawbah 9:34]
The meaning of "hoard it" is: they do not pay its zakah
and spend it not in the way of Allah - give them tidings of a painful punishment. (35) The Day when it will be heated in the fire of Hell and seared therewith will be their foreheads, their flanks, and their backs, [it will be said], "This is what you hoarded for yourselves, so taste what you used to hoard."
[At-Tawbah 9:34-35]
Do you understand? This is general. Whether the gold is little or much, and whether it is dirhams or dinars, or pieces of gold and pieces of silver, or jewelry—even though it is forbidden to use jewelry for eating and drinking—or jewelry. The texts are general. Do you understand, everyone? General. Is it specified or not? The answer: We look, and we say: It must reach the nisab, it must reach the nisab. The nisab of silver is five awqiya, five awqiya, based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
No Sadaqah is due on less than five Awaq. ليس فيما دون خمس أواق صدقة
Sunan an-Nasa'i 2486Sahih (Darussalam)
. The awqiyah is forty dirhams. So five awqiya is two hundred dirhams. These awqiya, in terms of grams, amount to five hundred and eighty-five grams. So whoever has less than that in silver, there is no zakah on it. Regarding gold, there is a hadith narrated by the people of the Sunan:
There is no zakah due on you for less than twenty dinars. ليس عليك فيما دون عشرين ديناراً زكاة
. And the dinar is a mithqal. So what is the nisab of gold? How much? Twenty mithqals. In grams, this amounts to eighty-five grams; less than that has no zakah.
Now, if someone says: I have half the nisab of gold and half the nisab of silver, do I complete one with the other?
The answer: Some scholars said: You complete one with the other. So if you have ten dinars and you have one hundred dirhams. If you look at each one individually, there is no zakah on it, because each one of them has not reached the nisab. But if you combine them, half of this and half of this, they become a nisab. This is a point of disagreement among scholars. And the stronger position is: that one is not added to the other, because the Sunnah indicates that this has its own nisab and this has its own nisab. And just as we do not add wheat to barley to complete the nisab, we will not add gold to silver to complete the nisab. Is that clear? Say yes or no?
The student: Yes.

The Shaykh : Now. So the question: Is gold added to silver to complete the nisab or not? No, according to the stronger position.
