The Description of the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) Hajj in General.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Hajj is an individual obligation, and the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) Hajj after his migration was performed once, by consensus. Allah the Exalted placed in this Hajj, despite the multitude of actions and the multitude of words it contains, a great blessing. Our righteous predecessors—the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them)—received it and transmitted it to us, and praise be to Allah, it was preserved, precise, and refined by the leading scholars of hadith until it is as if we are witnessing the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) who did not perform Hajj except once. But the blessing of Allah has no end and no limit. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) performed Hajj in the ninth year and announced that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would perform Hajj the following year. So the Muslims gathered from all directions from the Arabian Peninsula in order to witness the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) Hajj so that they could follow him and transmit it to the Ummah. A great number of people gathered, they were in front of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), behind him, to his right, and to his left; they were as far as the eye could see, as far as the eye could see, great nations to follow the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), to follow his lead, and to transmit his Hajj to his Ummah after them, and so it happened.
He (peace and blessings be upon him) set out on the twenty-fifth of Dhul-Qa'dah, a Saturday, and he descended at Dhul-Hulayfah and entered the state of ihram from there, then he proceeded to Makkah. When he reached the House, he performed the arrival tawaf, and he performed the sa'y of Hajj and 'Umrah because he was performing them in combination (qiran), and he remained in his state of ihram.
The student: May Allah reward you with good, O Shaykh. The sound is not clear in Buraydah.

The Shaykh : Yes, bring it closer, put it here. Perhaps your reception is weak.
The student: Now the sound has changed.

The Shaykh : Now it is good, or not?
The student: A little, a little.

The Shaykh : Good. He is now as close to me as he can be.
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) did not exit the state of ihram, because he had brought the sacrificial animals. He performed tawaf around the House and remained in his state of ihram and ordered his Companions to exit the state of ihram. Then he went out to the outskirts of Makkah and descended at al-Abtah, and his arrival was on Sunday, the fourth of the month of Dhul-Hijjah, and he remained there praying two rak'ahs and did not descend to the Sacred Mosque, neither for tawaf nor for prayer. On the eighth day, he (may the prayers and peace of Allah be upon him) proceeded with his Companions to Mina. So he descended there and prayed with them Zuhr, 'Asr, Maghrib, 'Isha', and Fajr, shortening them without combining them. When the sun rose, he proceeded to 'Arafah and descended at Namirah, which is a village located southwest of 'Arafah, in order to rest and to rest his mounts. When the sun passed its zenith, he ordered his camel to be saddled. It was saddled and he rode it and descended in the valley of 'Aranah, in the place where the mosque is built now. He descended there and ordered the mu'adhdhin to call the adhan for Zuhr. So he prayed Zuhr two rak'ahs, then 'Asr two rak'ahs, then he delivered a great and eloquent sermon to the people, which the scholars of knowledge took up for explanation and derivation of benefits. And among the best things I have seen is a treatise by Shaykh 'Abdullah ibn Humayd (may Allah have mercy on him) explaining this sermon, and it is printed and published. It is said: There is no one in 'Arafah who did not hear the sermon, meaning: that Allah Mighty and Majestic made it easy for the Muslims to hear this sermon in any place of 'Arafah.
Then he moved his camel to the place he chose to stand in. It is at Mount 'Arafah, which is called: Mount of Mercy. And that is an accidental name, otherwise its name is Ilaal, on the pattern of Hilal, or Mount 'Arafah, which is known now. He descended there. Why did he descend there? I think, and Allah knows best, that he chose to descend there to be behind his Companions, because it was his custom in travel to be the last of his people to check on those who lagged behind, may the prayers and peace of Allah be upon him. He stood on his camel calling upon Allah Mighty and Majestic, raising his right and left hands, until the bridle of his camel fell, and he took it with his hand with one of his hands while raising the other, until the sun set. Then he proceeded heading to Muzdalifah, and on the way, he (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) needed to urinate, so he went out to the wadi to the left of the one heading to Muzdalifah, and he descended and urinated and performed wudu', but he performed a light wudu' and did not do it thoroughly. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) had placed Usamah ibn Zayd ibn Harithah behind him on his camel. So Usamah said to him:
(Is it the time for) the prayer, O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)!" He replied, "The (place of) prayer is ahead of youالصلاة يا رسول الله! قال : الصلاة أمامك
Sahih al-Bukhari 1669, 1670
. Then he rode until he reached Muzdalifah after the time of 'Isha' had entered, so he performed wudu' thoroughly and ordered for the call to prayer to be made, then he prayed Maghrib, then 'Isha', then he spent the night there. When Fajr appeared, he ordered for the adhan for Fajr to be called, then he prayed Fajr in the darkness early, contrary to the custom. After that, he rode until he reached al-Mash'ar al-Haram, the place of the mosque today. And he stood on his camel calling upon Allah and seeking forgiveness from Allah until it became very light, and he used to say in 'Arafah:
1 have stayed here (near these rocks), and the whole of Arafat is a place for stay. وقفت هاهنا وعرفة كلها موقف
Sahih Muslim 1218c
. And in Muzdalifah he used to say:
I stopped here, and Muzdalifah in its entirety is a place of standing. وقفت هاهنا وجمع - يعني: مزدلفة - كلها موقف
As if the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) was indicating that each group should remain in their place so that they do not crowd a specific place. And the ruling is the same and the reward is the same. And when it became very light, he proceeded from Muzdalifah to Mina, and Mina at that time had three roads: a road on the right, a road on the left, and a road in the middle. So he took the middle road, because it leads directly to the Jamrat al-Aqabah, and he wanted to begin with stoning the Jamrah before anything else. Until he reached the Jamrah and stood, and he ordered 'Abdullah ibn 'Abbas to pick up pebbles—pebbles for the Jamrat—so he picked up seven pebbles only, larger than chickpeas and smaller than acorns. And he used to turn them in his hands and say:
Throw with stones like these, and beware of exaggeration in religion. بأمثال هؤلاء فارموا وإياكم والغلو في الدين
. He stoned it with seven pebbles, saying takbir with each pebble. And it is known that he would not reach the Jamrah until after the sun rose, because he stood in Muzdalifah until it became very light, then he proceeded on his camel, he stoned the Jamrat, then he slaughtered his sacrificial animals, he offered one hundred camels, may the prayers and peace of Allah be upon him
One hundred camels for seven hundred sheep. مائة بعير عن سبعمائة شاة
He slaughtered sixty-three camels with his noble hand. And he gave the rest to 'Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) to slaughter. Then he shaved his head and began with the right side and distributed the hair to the people. So now he had stoned, then—walk with us—then slaughtered, then shaved and exited the state of ihram. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) exited the state of ihram, then he descended to Makkah and performed tawaf around the House and drank from the water of Zamzam and prayed Zuhr there. Then he went out to Mina, he went out to Mina, he went out to Mina and found people who had not prayed, so he prayed again, because it is established that he prayed Zuhr in Mina and prayed in Makkah. And the reconciliation between them is that we say: He prayed in Makkah, and when he went out, he found some of his Companions had not prayed, so he prayed with them, may the prayers and peace of Allah be upon him. And he spent the night in Mina on the night of the eleventh. And when the sun passed its zenith on the eleventh day, he went to stone the Jamrat before he prayed Zuhr, after the sun passed its zenith and before the prayer. He stoned the first Jamrah with seven pebbles, then he advanced and faced the qiblah and raised his hands and made a long supplication. Then the middle one with seven pebbles, then he advanced and faced the qiblah and raised his hands and made a long supplication. Then the Jamrat al-Aqabah and he did not stand. Then he returned to his camp. And he spent the night in Mina on the night of the twelfth. And on the twelfth day, he did as he did on the eleventh day, then he spent the night in Mina on the night of the thirteenth, and he stoned the Jamrat on the thirteenth day as he stoned them on the day, what? The twelfth. Then he descended to Makkah and prayed Zuhr in Makkah—Zuhr of the thirteenth day—and he spent the night in a place called al-Mahassab because of its many pebbles. And at the end of the night, he ordered for departure, so the people departed. And he came to the House and performed tawaf al-wada' in it. Then he prayed the Fajr prayer. Then he departed to his place of migration, Taybah, al-Madinah. So how many days did he remain in Makkah? Ten days—from the fourth to the fourteenth. And for this reason, Anas ibn Malik was asked: How long did you remain in Makkah? He said:
We stayed there for ten days. أقمنا فيها عشراً
.
This is the description of the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) Hajj in general; we have presented it in general terms so that it would be easier and closer to understanding. But we have pauses in it.
