The Description of Hajj and 'Umrah
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Among the matters we are currently addressing is the description of 'Umrah and Hajj.First: We begin with the miqat.
When a person reaches the miqat, he performs ghusl as he does for janabah, and after undressing, he applies the best perfume he can find to his body, placing it on his head and his beard. Then he puts on the garments of ihram, a white izār and a white rida'. This is for the man. As for the woman, she wears whatever she wishes of clothing, provided she does not display her adornment.
Then, if it is the time for an obligatory prayer, he performs the obligatory prayer and enters into ihram afterwards. If it is not the time for an obligatory prayer, he prays a voluntary prayer, as it is a recommended practice, similar to the prayer of wudu'; for it is not established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he prescribed a specific prayer upon entering into the rites. After intending to enter into the rites, he recites the talbiyah,So he says: Labbaik Allahumma 'Umrah.
He proceeds toward Makkah and continues to recite the talbiyah until he begins the tawaf.
When beginning the tawaf, the first thing he does is to touch the Black Stone,Meaning: touching it with his hand and kissing it if it is possible. If not, the recommended practice is not to push and cause harm to himself or others. You know that in the pushing, a person loses the presence of intention and the presence of worship, because he is trying to defend himself. So if there is a crowd, the recommended practice is not to push. Point to it, and the pointing is sufficient. When pointing, do not kiss your hand. Then you begin the tawaf, and this is called the Tawaf of Arrival, which is also the Tawaf of 'Umrah at the same time.
In this tawaf, it is recommended for the man to perform idtibā' throughout the entire tawaf,And idtibā': by placing the middle of his rida' under his right armpit and its ends over his left shoulder, and to perform ramal in the first three circuits, not in the remaining four,And ramal: which is walking quickly without extending the stride,Meaning: hurrying but not extending the stride, rather a normal stride, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) did so in the Farewell Pilgrimage.
When you have completed the tawaf of seven circuits, proceed to the Station of Ibrahim and recite the words of Allah the Exalted: [al-Baqarah: 125] You recite this verse following the example of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and to be mindful of your obedience to the command of Allah. Then you pray two rak'ahs behind the Station, and these two rak'ahs are distinguished by reciting in the first: (Say: O you disbelievers) and in the second: (Say: He is Allah, the One) and you should be brief in them and not prolong them; because the place is for your prayer and for the prayer of others, so if you prolong it, you deprive others of the place.
When you have finished this, return to the Black Stone. If it is possible for you to touch it, do so; if not, there is no blame. Do not point in this case. Then exit the mosque,When you approach al-Safa, recite the words of Allah the Exalted: [al-Baqarah: 158] and ascend to al-Safa until you see the Ka'bah, then face it and raise your hands for supplication and dhikr,And say: saying Allahu Akbar three times (There is no god but Allah alone, with no partner. His is the dominion and His is the praise, and He is over all things competent. There is no god but Allah alone, who fulfilled His promise and gave victory to His servant, and defeated the confederates alone) Then you supplicate with whatever you wish, then you repeat the dhikr a second time and supplicate with whatever you wish, then you repeat the dhikr a third time and descend. Thus the dhikr is repeated three times and the supplication twice.
You descend from al-Safa heading toward al-Marwah, walking until you reach the green marker, that is: the green pole, which is known, praise be to Allah, and above your head are green signs indicating it. When you reach this, run as fast as you can if there is space, otherwise walk as is easy for you to the other marker, then walk normally to al-Marwah. When you reach al-Marwah, say what you said on al-Safa. This is one circuit. Then return from al-Marwah to al-Safa, and this is another circuit, and so on until seven circuits, beginning with al-Safa and ending with al-Marwah.
After this, shorten the hair of your head if you are performing tamattu'. If you are not performing tamattu', shave it or shorten it, and shaving is better. Then you exit from your ihram completely, you put on your clothes, you apply perfume, you enjoy your family if they are with you, and you do all that was forbidden to you by ihram.
When it is the eighth day of Dhu al-Hijjah, enter into ihram for Hajj from the place where you are. You perform ghusl, apply perfume, put on the garments of ihram, and go out to Mina to stay there until the sun rises on the ninth day. You pray there Zuhr, 'Asr, Maghrib, 'Isha', and Fajr, five times, each prayer in its time, except that you shorten the four-rak'ah prayers. When the sun rises, you proceed to 'Arafah. But if it is possible for you to stop at Namirah, which is a place near 'Arafah and not part of 'Arafah, stop there; because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) stopped at Namirah until the sun passed its zenith. Do this if it is possible, and if it is not possible, there is no blame in proceeding directly from Mina to 'Arafah.
When the sun passes its zenith on the Day of 'Arafah, then at that time you devote yourself to supplication and dhikr after praying Zuhr and 'Asr shortened and combined as a combination of advancing, and you devote yourself to dhikr and supplication on this great day, which is among the best days of the year and the closest to being answered, until the sun sets. When the sun sets, proceed from 'Arafah heading to Muzdalifah, and combine Maghrib and 'Isha',Meaning: by delaying Maghrib until you reach Muzdalifah, then you pray Maghrib and 'Isha' there. Maghrib is three rak'ahs and is not shortened, and 'Isha' is four rak'ahs, so you pray it as two rak'ahs.
Then you stay there until you pray Fajr there. When you have prayed Fajr, devote yourself to supplication and standing until it becomes very light,Meaning: until the lightening is clearly apparent. Then proceed to Mina and aim for the Jamarat al-Aqabah before anything else. You throw it with seven pebbles in succession, saying takbir with each pebble. Then you turn away after this to the place of sacrifice,Meaning: to the place where you intend to sacrifice your hady, so you sacrifice the hady, then you shave your head and perform the first exit from ihram.
Then you descend to Makkah to perform the Tawaf of Ifadah and the Sa'y of Hajj. Here, the tawaf is in your usual clothes, because you have performed the first exit from ihram, and there is no ramal. Likewise, the sa'y is in your usual clothes, but there is the sa'y between the two markers. Then when you have finished that, you have exited from ihram completely. You enjoy everything that was forbidden to you by ihram. Then you go out to Mina to stay there on the night of the eleventh and the night of the twelfth. On these two days, you throw the three jamarat, each with seven pebbles, beginning with the first, which is the farthest of the jamarat from Makkah. You throw it with seven pebbles in succession and say takbir with each pebble. Then you stand for supplication facing the qiblah, raising your hands, and you prolong the supplication if you are able, otherwise as is easy for you. Then you throw the middle one likewise and stand after it to supplicate. Then the Jamarat al-Aqabah likewise, but you do not stand after it; because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood between the first and second jamarat, and between the second and third, but did not stand after the third.
Then you stay in Mina until the twelfth day and throw the jamarat as you threw them yesterday. If you wish, you may hasten and descend to Makkah. If you wish, you may stay in Mina on the night of the thirteenth and throw the jamarat on the thirteenth day as you threw them on the eleventh and twelfth. Then Hajj ends on the last of the days of Tashriq. If you wish to return to your country, it is obligatory for you to perform the Tawaf of Farewell. It is obligatory on everyone who performs Hajj or 'Umrah, except that it is dropped for the menstruating woman or the woman with post-natal bleeding; because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) ordered the people that their last visit should be to the House, except that he made it easy for the menstruating woman. This is a summary of the description of Hajj and 'Umrah.

And take, [O believers], from the standing place of Abraham a place of prayer.
