The questioner : What is the disagreement among hadith scholars regarding the authentication of the hadith of 'Amr ibn Shu'ayb from his father from his grandfather? Some hadith scholars grade it as good, some weaken it, and some authenticate it. What is the reason for the disagreement, with details? May Allah reward you with good.

The Shaykh : The reason is well known. It is 'Amr ibn Shu'ayb from his father, who is Shu'ayb, from his grandfather. It is not 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr ibn al-'As, because it is 'Amr ibn Shu'ayb ibn Muhammad ibn 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr ibn al-'As. So when 'Amr ibn Shu'ayb says "from his father Shu'ayb from his grandfather," the mind jumps to the idea that the intended person is Muhammad, whereas the intended person is Abu Muhammad, who is 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr ibn al-'As. So the one who pointed out the defect in this chain of narration said that between Shu'ayb and his grandfather 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr ibn al-'As there is an intermediary, namely his father Muhammad. So there is a break in the chain of narration. However, some hadith scholars rejected this pointing out of the defect with chains of narration, some of which al-Hakim included in al-Mustadrak, in which it is explicitly stated that Shu'ayb met his grandfather 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr ibn al-'As. By that, the defect they mentioned, which is the break between Shu'ayb and his grandfather 'Abdullah, is removed.
So whoever has verified Shu'ayb's hearing from his grandfather 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr accepts his hadith, and whoever has not verified it points out the defect in his hadith by the break. This is the summary of the disagreement you asked about.
Anything else? Yes.

The questioner : A translation of your life, O Shaykh.

The Shaykh : This is not the place for that.
