What is obligatory for the followers of the imam when he concludes the prayer by saying: "Peace be upon you"?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : The second point is that many of those who follow the guidance of some scholars wait for the imam until he finishes both the right and left taslim, and then they begin their taslim to the right and left. This is one view and the opinion of some scholars. However, if we note an important point in this matter, which is that the taslim by which the worshipper exits his prayer is not the two taslims, but rather the first taslim. It is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
That he sometimes restricted himself to saying: Peace be upon you and Allah's mercy
only one taslim, as you hear in this country, the imam when he prays the funeral prayer restricts himself to the single taslim. This ruling is not specific to the funeral prayer, but it extends to all prayers, whether obligatory or voluntary. It is permissible for the imam, following the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), to sometimes restrict himself to the single taslim, and it is also permissible for him to perform the other taslim. The first taslim is a pillar of the prayer; it is what is meant by his saying (peace and blessings be upon him) in the well-known hadith:
its beginning is takbir and its end is taslim
Sunan Abi Dawud 61Hasan Sahih (Al-Albani)
Thus, the worshipper only exits his prayer and leaves it by the first taslim. If he does not perform the other taslim, his prayer is valid, but it is better to sometimes perform the second taslim as well, as we mentioned. The difference between the first taslim and the other taslim is that the first taslim is a pillar by which the Muslim exits the prayer, whereas the other taslim is a recommended practice (sunnah), because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not always maintain the second taslim, but rather sometimes he did and sometimes he did not. If we know this ruling, that the imam exits the prayer by the first taslim, then the follower follows the imam after the first taslim with his first taslim. If the imam also performs the second taslim, the followers follow him with the second taslim. If we know this ruling, we then arrive at knowing what some people do, who are described as the hasteners among people, meaning: the ones who rush. If the imam performs the first taslim and the follower rushes to perform his taslim after him and leaves, his prayer is valid, because he performed the pillar. All that is the case is that he missed following the imam in the second taslim. It came in *Sahih al-Bukhari* what indicates to us that in every era, among people there are the hasteners and the slow, deliberate ones. It also came in *Sahih al-Bukhari and Muslim* from the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said:
We prayed one day behind the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) the 'Asr prayer, and he performed the taslim at the end of the two rak'ahs, then he moved to a side of the mosque. Among them was a man called Dhu al-Yadayn, who said: O Messenger of Allah, did the prayer become short or did you forget? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Neither of that happened. He said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) looked at the Companions, among whom were Abu Bakr and 'Umar, and said: Is Dhu al-Yadayn telling the truth? They said: Yes. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) returned to his place
And I do not say: to his mihrab, because the mihrab was not in the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) mosque in his time or in the time of his Companions, but it was introduced later.
He returned to the place where he had prayed the two rak'ahs, so he completed the two forgotten rak'ahs, then he prostrated the two prostrations of forgetfulness
The point is that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed the taslim at the end of the two rak'ahs, Abu Hurayrah says:
The hasteners among the people left
and they left the mosque. Those who remained included Dhu al-Yadayn and the senior Companions. The conversation took place between the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and Dhu al-Yadayn and the Companions as you heard. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed the two forgotten rak'ahs and prostrated the two prostrations of forgetfulness for them. The hastening of people to exit the prayer seems to be a general tendency for many people who do not care to perform the remembrances and recitations that follow the prayer. Another incident occurred with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and all of this is legislation for people to learn what may happen to them of forgetfulness or error in prayer. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) once prayed the Maghrib prayer with two rak'ahs. Again, the hasteners among the people left, and it was said to him:
O Messenger of Allah, you prayed two rak'ahs! So he ordered the iqamah for the prayer to be called again, and he completed the rak'ah and also prostrated the two prostrations of forgetfulness
Therefore, we must note that if some people hasten as soon as the imam performs the first taslim, and they follow him, even if they did not wait for the second taslim, their prayer is valid, but they missed the following.
This is what I intended to explain in detail so that we do not expose people's prayers to invalidation or nullity merely because they preceded the imam in exiting the prayer in the second taslim, because the imam had already exited his prayer with the first taslim.
