What is the manner of prostration?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : In the name of Allah, and may prayers and peace be upon the Messenger of Allah. What is the manner of prostration?

The Shaykh : The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
when one of you prostrates himself he must not kneel in the manner of camel, but should put down his hands before his knees.
Sunan Abi Dawud 840Sahih (Al-Albani)
. This hadith is among the wonders of the disagreement that has occurred regarding its understanding, and even more amazing is that this happened among the Arabs, the people of camels. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
he must not kneel in the manner of camel
Sunan Abi Dawud 840Sahih (Al-Albani)
, then he explained this generality by saying:
but should put down his hands before his knees
Sunan Abi Dawud 840Sahih (Al-Albani)
. Some Arabs, let alone the non-Arabs, claimed that the hadith was inverted. They alleged that the narrator intended to say:
Let him place his knees before his hands.
, but the hadith was inverted upon him, so he said:
let him put his hands down before his knees
Sunan an-Nasa'i 1091Hasan (Darussalam)
. This is due to their negligence regarding what they observe in their lands of camels kneeling. When a camel kneels, it kneels on its front parts, meaning on its hands, and its knees are in its hands, not in its rear. Therefore, the camel differs from the human being in this respect, as the camel's knees are in its front parts. Thus, when the Messenger (peace be upon him) said:
When one of you prostrates, let none of you kneel as the camel kneels.
, meaning: do not kneel on the two knees on which the camel kneels, but rather meet the ground with your palms, then follow them with your knees.
As for the evidence of those who oppose these two authentic hadiths, it is a hadith narrated by Abu Dawud and others from the narration of Wail ibn Hujr: "That he saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when he prostrated, he placed his knees before his hands." However, this hadith is through the route of Shurayk ibn Abdullah al-Qadi. Although he was an excellent and truthful judge, the scholars of hadith agreed that he had poor memory. Therefore, when Imam Muslim narrated from him in his "Sahih," he only included narrations supported by others, indicating that his solitary narrations are not to be used as evidence. Thus, this hadith has a weak chain. In addition to its weak chain, it contradicts the first two authentic hadiths; therefore, it is not permissible to use it to oppose those two authentic hadiths. This is what can be answered regarding this question briefly.

The questioner : May Allah reward you with good.
