The Shaykh : What is the fifth?
The questioner : The sixth.
The Shaykh : The sixth, are you sure?
The questioner : Yes.
The Shaykh : Intentional vomiting also invalidates the fast, based on the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sunan Ibn Majah 1676Da’if (Darussalam) What does "one who is overcome by vomiting" mean? It means one whom vomiting has overcome; he owes no make-up fast. And one who induces vomiting intentionally must make it up. The hadith is clear. What is the wisdom behind vomiting being an invalidator of the fast? The wisdom is that when a man vomits, or a fasting person vomits, his stomach is emptied of food, and he is afflicted with weakness that he generally cannot withstand. So, out of Allah's mercy for him, if he vomits intentionally, his fast is invalidated, and he is told to eat and drink. Therefore, it is not permissible for one whose fast is obligatory to vomit intentionally, whether in Ramadan, as an expiation, or as a make-up fast. We tell him now: since you have emptied the food from your stomach, your body still needs food, so be gentle with yourself and eat until that weakness caused by the vomiting subsides.
