The questioner : It is said: I have a wife, and she has two older brothers who have many sons and daughters. My wife has also given birth to sons and daughters. My wife’s mother and her brothers breastfed my sons and daughters along with the sons and daughters of my wife’s brothers. The question is: Is it permissible for one of the sons of my wife’s brothers to marry one of my daughters? And who bears the responsibility in such a matter? Please inform us; may Allah reward you.

The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah. As for those who were breastfed by your grandmother, among your children and the children of your wife’s brothers, they are siblings, and it is not permissible for some of them to marry others.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : If we assume that one of your daughters was breastfed by her grandmother, and one of the sons of your wife’s brothers was breastfed by the aforementioned grandmother, then it is not permissible for him to marry your daughter, because they are siblings. As for those among your children or the children of your wife’s brothers who were not breastfed by their grandmother, there is no prohibition between them, so it is permissible for a man among them to marry a woman. If you have a daughter who was not breastfed by her grandmother, and your wife’s brothers have a son who was not breastfed by his grandmother, then it is permissible for him to marry your daughter.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Yes, this answer is clear. As for the questioner’s statement, “Who bears the responsibility in this?” there is no responsibility in that, because breastfeeding may be necessitated by circumstances, especially in the past when people did not have what they needed when a mother’s milk dried up, so they were forced to seek a wet nurse to breastfeed the child. In that case, there is no responsibility involved.

The questioner : Well done.
This message is from Yahya Ahmad al-Ansi from Dhahran. He says: Peace be upon you and Allah’s mercy and blessings. And after that.
