The questioner : He says: I hope you will inform me about the Sacred Masha'ir. Is it the mosque located in Muzdalifah, or is it a mountain? I have read in a book I have that the Sacred Masha'ir is a mountain in Muzdalifah, and if the Masha'ir is a mountain, should the pilgrim ascend it and make du'a' there?

The Shaykh : The Sacred Masha'ir sometimes refers to the specific place where the mosque was built, which is the place the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to when he prayed Fajr in Muzdalifah. He rode until he reached the Sacred Masha'ir, then he stood there and called upon Allah the Exalted, glorified Him, and praised Him until it became very light. Sometimes, the Sacred Masha'ir refers to all of Muzdalifah; the term Sacred Masha'ir is used to mean all of Muzdalifah. This is like the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)
And I have stayed here (at Muzdalifa near Mash'ar al-Haram and the whole of Muzdalifa) is a place for stay وقفت هاهنا وجمع كلها موقف
Sahih Muslim 1218c
And Allah Mighty and Majestic said:
But when you depart from 'Arafat, remember Allah at al- Mash'ar al-Haram. فإذا أفضتم من عرفات فاذكروا الله عند المشعر الحرام
[Al-Baqarah 2:198]
.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Accordingly, the Sacred Masha'ir sometimes refers to the specific place where the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood, which is the well-known mountain in Muzdalifah upon which the mosque was built. Sometimes, it refers to all of Muzdalifah, because it is a Sacred Masha'ir. It is specified as the Sacred Masha'ir because there is a lawful Masha'ir, which is 'Arafah. It is a Masha'ir, indeed the greatest of the spatial Masha'ir, but it is lawful because it is outside... the Haram. Unlike the Sacred Masha'ir of Muzdalifah, where people stand, which is forbidden. Mina was not called a Sacred Masha'ir because there is no standing there. The standing between the pillars during the days of Tashriq is not an independent standing, but it is part of the worship of stoning the pillars.
