The questioner : In his letter, he says: I am asking about a man praying in long trousers without wearing any clothing underneath. Is the prayer valid, given that this man is able to purchase other clothing? And is it valid for him to lead a congregation of worshippers? I ask you to issue a ruling and clarify this for me and for anyone listening. May Allah reward you with the best reward.

The Shaykh : If a person covers what he is obligated to cover of his 'awrah, even if it is in a single garment, then that is sufficient and acceptable. However, it is better to pray in a garment that is ample, covering his shoulders and his 'awrah, which for a man is the area between the navel and the knee. Accordingly, we say that if a person prays in trousers that cover the area between the navel and the knee, or in an izar, then his prayer is valid, provided that it is covering.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : However, if it is not covering, such as if it is thin and reveals the skin behind it, then that is not acceptable, because in reality he has not covered himself. Likewise, what some people do with their short trousers that do not cover the area between the navel and the knee, and then they wear very light clothing over them such that the lower part of the thigh, near the knee, is visible and apparent, this is also not permissible and is not allowed.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Rather, it is obligatory for them to wear either thick clothing that covers, or ample trousers that cover the area between the navel and the knee.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : As for his prayer in congregation, if he is the most knowledgeable of the people in recitation, there is no blame on him for praying with them. Otherwise, the people should be led by the one among them who is most knowledgeable of the Book of Allah. If they are equal in recitation, then the one most knowledgeable of the Sunnah leads them.

The questioner : If he is the most knowledgeable of the people in recitation, he leads them, even if he is wearing trousers that cover.

The Shaykh : Of course, provided that his trousers cover.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : However, if they do not cover, then it is not valid for him to lead them, and his own prayer is not valid either.

The questioner : This letter is from the sister listener, saying via S.B.M. from the Haramain Secondary School, she has two problems. The first problem.
